Thank you everyone for visiting my site and commenting! I had a blast reviewing yaoi but with my writing schedule, it's getting to be too difficult to keep up with all my blogs, website, twitter, FB - !!! What I will be do is post on my author blog (separate page) the current yaoi I'm reading, and what I think about it. There won't be an extensive review but I'll answer any comments. Lately, I picked up a few good books. A couple of them are keepers.

Crimson Snow by Hori Tomoki

This book has been getting a lot of good press and I have to agree with the positive reviews. The artwork is beautiful and expressive and the stories well paced. I especially enjoyed the first story - Crimson Snow. And, especially since it ties up the story in the last vignette so it doesn't leave a reader hanging.

Crimson Snow is a simple moving piece - about a young gangster, shot and bleeding, found by a young tea ceremony master, Yukihiro. Yukihiro takes him into his household of three and nourishes him back to health. What I loved about this story was the yakuza's internal POV and his coming to terms with his past and how there was another life to live that he had no idea existed. In the end, he does the right thing but it's heart wrenching, and thus, we have the vignette at the end of the book.

Beautifully done!

I hope the US published more books by Hori Tomoki - because I'd snatch them up!

No Touching At All by Kou Yoneda

No Touching At All is a solid entry in the yaoi market. I really enjoyed that all 200+ pages was a continuation of one story line - the romance between shy Shima and his boss, extrovert Togawa.

Shima gets his introduction to his boss in the elevator. Togawa is still drunk and stinks to high heaven, not a great first impression! He barely makes it out of the elevator before he has to race to the bathroom before he loses his breakfast!

At first the overbearing Togawa put Shima on edge. Togawa is persistent in wanting to spend time with Shima and finally they connect. It's not an easy relationship, Shima reluctant to get involved with a straight man. But Togawa is sweet and attentive. Will Shima risk his heart for a chance at happiness?

The artwork is great. I love Yoneda's expressive style and clean lines. The story line is good (not as good as Yamada's No One Loves Me ) but close. I didn't give it a five star because at times I had a difficult time with the translation. Sometime I didn't know who was talking and that's irritating. But that's my biggest complaint, so that's not so bad :)

I look forward to other manga by this artist.

Two Great Stories by Yugi Yamada

I'm so happy to start my New Year with two great books by Yugi Yamada. I was able to purchase them at my local comic book store before they were released on Amazon, and I grabbed them quickly. Yugi Yamada is a favorite of mine, her stories always wacko but entertaining along with her bold artwork.

No One Loves Me is a whooping 300+ pages and the same price as most of June's Manga's yaoi. That alone is worth the price of this book. It's a lovely story about a very closed and cool bookworm - Katshuhiro and the outgoing salesman's - Masafumi. There are so many very small tender moments in this manga that's just so darn sweet, and warms my romantic heart. It's rare when opposites attract but the characters are so well defined that you really can see how they compliment each other.

Open the Door To Your Heart is part of the Close the Last Door series which began with the youngest Honda brother - Kenzo. Remember that story?

This story is about the older Honda brothers - Shoichi the oldest, and Shunji the middle son. Shoichi is serious, stiff and proper in every way. His profession is tax collector, and he wears his suit and tie with pride. Shunji is the globetrotting, sexy wild brother that shows up one day in the shop where Shoichi goes to collect the overdue taxes.

Shoichi is shocked to see Shunji after ten years, their scandalous secret buried deep in his heart. Ten years ago they ended up in each other's arms and heart. Shunji left town but now that he's returned, will their attraction to each other be hard to ignore?

This story is full of angst and Yugi Yamada makes you really feel it.

I highly recommend both books, well worth their price. And, as her usual fare, Yamada has written wonderful quirky secondary characters that add another level of interest to the stories. I so look forward to Close the Last Door volume 2.

Cool/Uncool by Arika Kuga and Kai Asou

I debated on giving this a three or four rose rating. I'm sure I'll have readers disagree with me on this one, and would give it a lower rating. It's another high school romance, and the premise is rather weird, but I read it again, and decided on a four star.

Takashi and Yukihisa have been friends since forever. No surprise there! But recently, Takashi has been putting distance between him and Yukihisa. (Okay, again no surprise!)

Frustrated Yukihisa tries to find out what is bugging his friend! Takashi refuses to tell him. Then suddenly Takashi befriends a girl, and Yukihisa is jealous. Okay, it takes no great mind to know what happens next. And the reason for Takashi's cool treatment towards his friend is rather silly. But despite these points, I still enjoyed the book.

Okay, I know, I'm a sucker for best friends turn lovers. It could have used a little more angst, but I liked the characters. It's a very lighthearted romance, and rather sweet, too. If you enjoy this type of romance, you should enjoy Cool/Uncool.

Endless Comfort by Sakuya Sakura

This is a beautifully illustrated book! If you love to look at pretty 'pictures' (like I do!), well, this will be for you. The story held my interest, and I especially loved the Great Danes! The story line touches on child abuse and this adds more interest to the character, Yuu Kanai.

Masaki Kuzumi returns from Hong Kong to his manor home where his mother onced lived. There he meets gentle dog trainer, Yuu Kanai. Beautiful Kuzumi finds comfort in Kanai, but also senses a very dark secret within the young man. He wants to help him, befriend him but doesn't know if Kanai will feel comfortable since he is gay. Kuzumi has his own sadness. Can the two comfort each other and find inner peace and love?

There is a secondary love story as well. I just wished it was more flushed out between Yuuki and Amamiya. I felt it needed better closure, not unless Sakura plans on writing a sequel about these two which I'd like to read.

Three Stars Books

I've read a lot of yaoi lately so I'm bunching these three together since they all get a 3 rose rating. These books were entertaining, and the artwork good. The characters didn't resonate with me on a deeper level but I enjoyed the twist of these stories. I just won't be keeping them on my bookshelf.

Stray Cat by Halco - Kaoru is standoffish, independent and proud, just like a cat. This had cost him many a relationship. When the cat-loving Yohei meet Kaoru, will the cool Kaoru melt enough of his heart to let Yohei in? Published by Blu Manga, using their large format. Mature rating.

Mysterious Loveby Taishi Zaou - Masafuma has premonition dreams. Since Jr. High, he's been having dreams of sleeping with a guy. And always a particular guy. To his horror, he meets up with the guy of his dreams in the high school hall way. Petrified that he'll become gay, he does everything in his power to ignore the guy. Published by Doki Doki. Rated 18+

Love Potion by Sakuya Fujii - Yuuri is the unlikely inheritor of a pheromone that makes him irresistible to every man and woman who he meets up with. The student, Hasegawa is convinced he's in love with Yuuri, but Yuuri believes he's like all the rest, only attracted to him because of the pheromone. Published by June Manga. Rated 18+

Seven Days by Venio Tachibana and Rihito Takarai

This is an interesting twist on the high school love story. There's a rumor going around that Touji Seryou will go out with anyone who asks him out on a Monday. There's a catch, he breaks up with his girlfriend at the end of the week.

A lover with a one week expiration date!

Well, imagine his surprise when Yuzuru Shino sees him at the school gate on Monday morning, and on a whim asks Seryou out! And imagine Shino's surprise when he realizes that Seryou takes him up on the offer. What happens is a very nice love story that unfolds day by day. And, you learn about Seryou's reasons for his one-week expiration on relationships.

The book is written by Venio Tachibana and illustrated by Rihito Takarai. The illustrations are wonderful, very expressive and distinct. Takarai has her own style -- kind of breezy. The story kept my interest, which is no small feat when it comes to high school BL.

Now, the catch, it has two more volumes (I think) - this volume is Monday through Thursday. There is Friday, and a Saturday through Sunday. Amazon doesn't have either of these volumes listed. I hope this isn't going to be like Kiss Blue, the second volume published two years later - because frankly, that's just WRONG!

Love Knot by Lemon Ichijo

This book has a series of short stories that are well written and very enjoyable for being 'shorts'. The main title - Love Knot - is about two guys who knew each other in junior high. Yada, Yada, Yada..you know the drill.

But, besides the typical story line, I love Ichijo's artwork and she packs a lot of punch in her shorts and in her art panels. Wonderful artwork which is worth the purchase of the book...AND, the sex is very explicit which is a change of pace from most anthologies.

It's her next three stories that I really enjoyed about twin brothers! :) It's funny and sweet and sexy...especially the older twin's love interest, Jin, the tall brooding type who is protective of both twins. The characters are older, working folks - taking the story setting out of high school (yea!).

Stay Close To Me by Yaya Sakuragi

OMG, this is just TOO CUTE. I really fell in love with the tall, lanky uke, Yuzu. Yuzu's one dream is to be the best homemaker (and princess, too) for his knight in shining armor - Icchan.

There's just something so endearing about Yuzu and his dream, that I was rooting for him all through his home econ classes and his bumbling antics! And Icchan never wavers in his protection and support of his best friend. You can see how much Icchan cares for Yuzu.

There is a lot going on in the art panels which is refreshing. And I know, it takes place in school, and it's another best friends fall in love story, but this works on so many levels for me. The story is fun, and the artwork support the emotional feel of the story.

This one is a keeper and will be read when I want a heartwarming story to make me smile.

Double Cast and Baseball Heaven

I really enjoyed Ellie Mamahara's Alley of First Love when it came out last year from Blu Manga, and so I was looking forward to these two new releases. I love her bold artwork. She has a very distinctive style - sharp black and white bold images.

Where I'd like to see more is in the story telling - which is why I gave these two books 4 rather than 5 stars. I do appreciate that she doesn't set her stories in high school or college, having enough of reading yaoi with these particular settings.

Double Cast is about two very different actors. It's a little of Embracing Love...but not with the stellar story telling of Youka Nitta. Actually, the original story was written by Takana Mizuhashi. I liked the main characters but wanted more chemistry and interaction between the two men.

In short, two beguiling men try to outperform one another on stage. Yuki is older, established and relies on his beauty and not his acting talent, until he meets Mitsuru. Mitsuru is young, serious and steals the limelight from the older star. This sends Yuki into a tailspin of self-doubt and self-reflection.

I also liked the secondary character - Kaho - Yuki's girlfriend, a young and adorable actress with more insight than you'd think! She also has a very cute cat, too!

Baseball Heaven is about the Tokyo Elephants, a baseball team having a great season. One reason is their star pitcher, Uno. A rookie, he is friendly to everyone except Ogata, the star shortstop. What's this cold shoulder all about?

When Ogata finds out, he's shocked but little by little is intrigued by the rookie.

I love sports so it was fun reading about a baseball team.

Both stories were an enjoyable read!

In the Walnut 2 and Cafe Latte Rhapsody

I just LOVE Toko Kawai's books. She just knows how to tell a story and does it with great expressive artwork. It's a winning combination.

In the Walnut volume 2 is the continuation of the eccentric and anti-social Tanizaki and his lovable, naive but incredibly sweet Nakai. Volume 2 is less of a romance and more about what goes on at the shady 'In the Walnut' gallery. What is really Tanizaki up to? This sloppy guy really knows his stuff, and has an incredible eye for spotting art forgeries.

This gets him into some interesting predicaments!

A fun series, and especially for me, since I have an art background. I really enjoy these stories and while there isn't a lot of romance in this volume, I didn't mine. Tanizaki cares for Nakai and it shows in small ways, and is really sweet how much he cares what Nakai thinks of him. I love how Toko Kawai can create a closed-up, hard alpha male and give him enough softness to melt a person's heart.

Now, Cafe Latte Rhapsody is a totally SWEET romance - all sugar and spice...it's so sweet, it will give you a tooth ache. Oh, but it works somehow. I just couldn't help but root for cute Hajime and tall and awkward Keito.

Usually shy semes with constant tears in their eyes make me want to throw the book across the room, but it works with this couple. And I love Hajime's freckles! He's nice and patient with Keito.

If you like an innocent and light romance, this book if for you.

Tyrants Falls in Love by Hinako Takanaga

I really looked forward to this yaoi being published in the U.S. I had heard a lot of good things about it. I enjoy Hinako Takanaga's works, some stories more than others, but she never disappoints when it comes to her art. And, I wasn't disappointed with this pervy story, either! It's classic yaoi - and Takanaga does it so well.

It's absolute torture for sweet college student Morinaga to be in love with his mentor, hot headed and homophobic Tatsumi. Years of unrequited love has not diminished the love he feels for Tatsumi. Poor boy. Well, one day Morinaga's friend gives him an opportunity that can give him a chance at Tatsumi, at least between the sheets! He argues with his devil side - should he or shouldn't he...but suddenly one night, fate takes over.

For the story being totally off the wall and just plain silly, it works so well, it leaves you smiling and laughing and rooting for Morinaga. My heart even began to soften for Tatsumi.

This is the first volume. The ending leaves the reader wanting more, and that's always a good thing.

Maiden Rose by Fusanosuke Inariya

It's been a while since I've posted but I have been reading some really good yaoi lately.

Maiden Rose is a five rose winner! I just completed volume 2 (not sure there is a volume 3 so if any one knows please comment!) and it didn't' disappoint.

This is an epic romance adventure that is very different from so many yaoi stories that are published in the U.S. It has all the action of a war epic, mature hunky soldiers as well as the typical uke types, and hot - hot - sex between the two heroes - Taki Reizen and his 'knight' Claus von Wolfstadt. Forbidden love always makes for great angst and fiery sex. At times its heart wrenching to read.

The artwork is strong and emotional. The sex scenes very graphic. It's a yaoi for adults.

Calling by Miu Otsuki

Calling by Miu Otsuki sneaks up on a reader. It's a love story between two opposites, shy businessman Kazuaki and Kira, an openly lovable porn star. Kazuaki has a very predictable life, and goes through the motions of living. He's a sweet, quiet guy, doesn't make waves, and doesn't veer from his place of safety. Until he runs into Kira, while Kira is filming an outdoor porn scene in a park! (Like that would ever happen in real life, but why read yaoi if you're looking for reality, right!).

I love how the relationship builds between the two men - and deepens over time. Miu Otsuki does a remarkable job in a one-shot. I found myself sighing over certain scenes and smiling, too. The story chapters layer upon the next one, showing the reader how Kazuaki and Kira's love blossoms and the sacrifices they're willing to make for each other.

Blu Manga's new format has two color inserts at the beginning of the book. Very nice! Also, there are some pretty explicit sex scenes without 'forced sex' - which I find refreshing for a change. The artwork is expressive and very pretty to look at.

I look forward to reading more work by this author.

The Object of my Affection

I didn't really know what to expect from this book. I've never read Nanao Okuda's work and it looked like another ho-hum boy's love romance set in a school. Nicely surprised, I really enjoyed the characters. The stories interweave between characters so it reads like a one-shot instead of a hodge-podge of short stories that totally annoy me!

The main story focuses on the cool basketball star Anzai and the young and upcoming basketball player, Wakamiya. Deep admiration for the star, Wakamiya enrolls in the same university so he can play with his hero on the court. But when he gets to the university, Anzai isn't attending any of the practices. Wakamiya sets out to discover why, and along the way, falls in love.

This is a breezy summer read without too much angst, except for Anzai's best friend, Yoji, who can't express his feelings too well. But not to worry, even though he realizes that he loves Anzai, he knows their friendship will not blossom into love. He gets his own romance with another basketball star that compliments the quiet, reserve Yoji.

Dry Heat by Yugi Yamada

I've been reading a lot of yaoi lately, catching up from the dry spell from last year!

I love Yugi Yamada's work and Dry Heat is no exception. Her definite style distinguishes her yaoi from dozens of others that seem to blend together in their pretty boy art style and story lines. While I like pretty boys, I also enjoy men that are rougher around the edges.

Yamada's stories also has a surprise or two for the reader. Her female characters add to the story rather than distract from it, and that's refreshing.

Dry Heat is about a young charge, Tatsuhiko Sendo, and his caretaker, Itaru Abe. After Tatsuhiko goes away to a prestigious academy, years pass without Tatshuiko seeing or hearing from Itaru. One day, he ups and leaves school and disappears. Itaru is hired to find him.

Chaotic events occur and mixed identifies assume, and when the two are reunited, Itaru is shocked how much his charge has changed!

There is an interesting side plot that involves Tatsuhiko's school friend and his friend's sister that adds mystery to the story.

Dry Heat is a keeper.

Kiss Your Hair and Isle of Forbidden Love by Duo Brand

I'm reviewing two by Duo Brand. Kiss Your Hair is a series of shorts and so that's why I gave it a three roses. I rarely will give more than a three rose rating to short stories because I always want more. There just isn't enough depth of character when the artist/writer has only a few pages in which to create her story.

Now, if you're a Duo Brand fan girl or boy, you won't be disappointed. One thing I must say, the shorts are not the usual fare, and so that is satisfying. The guys are slim and have legs that go on forever, lots of long hair (which I love), and sexy.

If you like shorts, you'll like this book. It's entertaining for a quick read, and the chibis at the end of each story are really, really, really cute! A nice addition. Plus there's a short written story, too.

Isle of Forbidden Love gets a four star from me. An interesting story line - and if you like fantasy you'll enjoy this book. The setting is ancient Edo, Japan. A series of mysterious murders are taking place in Edo, and an eager peace keeper Aki is determined to solve the crime. He meets up with an older man, Kuga, who is also trying to find out what is going on, or is he the murderer? The story only gets weirder but I don't want to give too much away! Let's just say that Edo is a mysterious isle that is shrouded from present day reality.

As always, Duo Brand creates nice artwork and entertaining and sexy boys.

The Summit by Lee Young Hee

I'm amazed that DramaQueen is actually publishing new yaoi! I'm not sure how this has happened, but I'm glad it has. I ordered The Summit directly through their website and promptly received the book in my mailbox.

It's a Korean BL story. And like so many Korean BL's, there is actually a story behind the relationship. This with the stunning artwork makes it a keeper. The publication is very high quality with 4 color inserts.

The boy's are beautiful with big almond shaped eyes - the seme dark and brooding, and the uke blond, sassy and no push over. Just how I like my characters. And since there are more volumes to come, the love story can slowly unveil.

Han Sae is a dark and handsome loved by women, but he just got dumped! His already bad day just gets worse when Moto, a brazen thief, steals his wallet.

Big mistake, Moto!

Han Sae isn't willing to put up with much more. Wanting to teach this stray a lesson, he goes after the thief. Soon he's embroiled in Moto's shady life and the golden hair stray just won't leave him alone.

There's quite a bit of humor sprinkled through out the pages, and the art is wonderful. That alone makes it an enjoyable book, but what I really like is the relationship development between Han Sae and Moto. There is no 'wham, bam, thank you sir' that is in so many yaois and it's refreshing.

I'm looking forward to volume 2, so let's hope DramaQueen comes through.

I've Moved Next Door to You by Fuhri Misasagi

Finally more yaoi to read! I've purchased several books in the last few weeks and will start with I've Moved Next Door to You by Fuhri Misasagi. This is the first yaoi I've read by this mangaka, and I was impressed. The artwork is quite lovely and expressive. The story held my interest with its humorous moments sprinkled with enough angst to keep me interested. Yes, there is a threesome, but in the end, a decision is made.

A very wealthy businessman is down and out, and is forced to live in a ramshackle apartment. The problem is the very close quarters to the neighbor, Renji. Renji takes advantage of Takumi's naivete and easy access, flirting outrageously with him, and the results are hilarious. To add tension, Takumi's secretary, the handsome serious Kamoshida is not happy with the arrangement, and especially Renji's flirtatious manner. Then to his horror, Renji turns his charms on him!

For an 801 Media publication, the sex is not that explicit - only a few scenes are graphic compared to some of the other hotter yaois out on the market. The story takes precedent and that's fine by me. I rather have the story carry the plot than the sex.

This will be a keeper on my bookshelf.

Tea for Two by Yaya Sakuragi

This is the final volume of Yaya Sakuragi's series about two high school students that can't be more opposite! You have the cool and mature Hasune, who has his life planned out by his famous Tea Ceremony family. He is to follow in the footsteps of his father and take over the business. Then there's hapless go-lucky Tokumaru, who is clumsy and clueless, but good at sports.

The interaction of these two characters make a delightful series that is warm and funny and touching. Their relationship progresses in the four books and this final version ties it all together with some angst thrown in.

The last volume finds our couple preparing for college. Hasune is yearning for more of a committment of Hasune's feelings for him. It's nothing but awkward between these two couples. Then complication arises when one of Hasune's old flames appears.

I really enjoyed this series. The ending is very satisfying and all the previous characters are back. Pick this one up for its solid story and nice artwork.

In the Walnut by Toko Kawai

I have nothing but good things to say about Toko Kawai's artwork and stories. And, In the Walnut is no exception! There's something so endearing about this couple - the aloof, scruffy rogue, Tanizaki, and the adorably cute and sensitive Nakai. In the Walnut is a collection of stories that center around In the Walnut art gallery, a business Tanizaki inherits from his grandfather. Each story is unique and there's one that brought tears to my eyes -- it features an adorable young boy and his sister, and the artist Klee. I love how Kawai weaves art and the artists into her stories.

This is a thick volume over 200 pages of wonderful interaction between Tanizaki and Nakai. Just one look, and you understand how much Tanizaki relies on Nakai for his own emotional support. The love between the two men is unquestionable in their simple actions and their words. I hated turning the last page!

I'm thrilled there's going to be a volume 2 with a release date of April. It's been such a dry season for really great yaoi published in the States. Let's hope we can look forward to more great yaoi in the future.

How to Capture a Martini by Makoto Tateno

This is typical Makoto Tateno and that's just fine by me. How to Capture a Martini is full blown angst and passionate unrequited love.

Underclassman Naoyuki had fallen in love with the beautiful Shinobu, two years his senior. Naoyuki believed Shinobu loved him, and even after Shinobu's graduation, he still believed they would be together forever. But instead, he was stood up by Shinobu, and his beloved disappeared from Naoyuki's life.

Shinobu was Naoyuki's first kiss, Shinobu made him his first drink (yes, you guessed it, a martini!), and Shinobu was his first sexual experience.

Four years go by, and memories of their love still haunt Naoyuki, but he's moved on. He attends college and has a girlfriend and every thing is going great until a chance encounter brings him face to face with his beloved!

One thing I like is the secondary characters add much humor and interest to the story. The bartender Kousaka is really funny and clueless, and I was happy when I read that he's to be the main character of Tateno's next book - How to Control a Sidecar.

Don't miss this one.

Dog X Cat by Yoshimi Amasaki

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I didn't really know what to expect. Another 'best friends in love' story line, and ho hum. But when I started reading it, I got enmeshed into the character's relationship, and couldn't stop laughing at their antics. It does get serious in the last chapter, and somewhat hard to take, but it all plays out for the best in the end. I believe it was written in to include even more smuttier sex! JMHO

Junya has always loved his best friend - Atsu. One day he finally confesses his love, and wants to have a sexual relationship. His dog-like devotion earns him Atsu's agreement that they can be more than friends. Atsu just can't resist a cute dog! Junya loves the cat-like Atsu but worries that his love isn't returned. This pretty much sums up the story, of Junya desperate for Atsu to say he loves him.

Okay, you can guess where the story is heading, but it's so entertaining along the way, that I can forgive the mundane plot. It's funny and charming and extremely smutty at times. So what if it's predictable. The artwork is beautiful, and another bonus is the page count. A thick volume that takes a while to read and absorb. There's so much art and expressive angst between the two boys. And, it features a fat, cuddly cat and a 'too adorable' dog!

I look forward to more work by Yoshimi Amasaki.

Tea for Two 3 by Yaya Sakuragi

I forgot about this volume until I happily spied it on Amazon one day as I was perusing the yaoi selection. I quickly read the first two volumes to catch up with the characters before tackling Tea for Two 3. It continues with the main storyline of the relationship between clumsy Tokumaru and the elegant Hasune -- two of the most unlikely pair of lovers that somehow make it work.

Hasune, the cool and beautiful wealthy son of famous tea ceremony parents, is continuing his heritage by working at the family tea house during summer vacation. Tokumaru flounders through the summer wondering what he is going to do with his life after high school. (Been there, done that!) Hasune seems to have it all together, while Tokumaru can't seem to make a decision. As the summer wanes, events unfold that lights the way for both Hasune and Tokumaru, and prepares them for a future -- hopefully together.

This is a charming, sweet and fun story. The comedic quality of the work has enough drama sprinkled in to prevent it from being too saccharin. And, I've always enjoyed Yaya Sakuragi's artwork - her characters attractive and emotional expressive.

At the end of the book, there was a blurb for volume 4. Hopefully Blu Manga will publish it sooner than later.

Blue Sheep Reverie 2 and Yellow 2

Blue Sheep Reverie is one of my favorite series by Makoto Tateno and the second volume is as good as the first. It's a continuation of the triangle between Kai and the brother, Lahti and his sister, Maria. A three way love triangle that refuses to be resolved. Kai wants nothing more to serve the aloof and beautiful Lahti, but he also has a soft spot for the sister, who he used to love.

This volume is about the mysterious Sarte Group, who needs to regroup and and elect a new leader after he is assassinated. Who will take over the leadership -- will it be Lahti or the leader's son, Narada. The story is full of murder, double-cross and blackmail -- a very typical Tateno plot with twists and turns. And what makes me really happy, Makoto Tateno has hinted there will be a third volume! I want more of Kai and Lahti. I find their chemistry hot and angst-filled and hungry.

I highly recommend this series!

This is another Makoto Tateno favorite! And, what treat to have new episodes with Taki and Goh after all these years. After the end of Yellow, our boys were on a never ending honeymoon, but like all honeymoons, it has to end. Satisfied to be retired from their careers as snatchers, they are lured out of retirement by Lieutenant Hatozaki with a case that's perfect for our 'snatchers'. It's great to have the boys back in town!

This is a typical Yellow, including some very hot sex thrown in. If you loved Yellow, you should appreciate this small volume. This is the first of the three-part series.

Merry Family Plan by Sumitomo Morozumi

I absolutely LOVED the first story - which is 80 pages. The two boys are very innocent and charming. And, even though it is a high school romance, it does show the couple in their later years, which is fun. The two boys - Shibutami and Yoshizumi - are lovable, and their shyness with one another, and their vulnerability shines through.

The rest of the volume is good, just not stellar. This is why I gave it three roses instead of a four or five rating. This is Sumitomo Morozumi debut volume, and it is very promising. I expect great stories from her in the future. She has a very whimsical and light-hearted style, and her artwork is presented like an American comic book -- with its small linear panels.

I recommend this book for its refreshing artwork and light reading. It put a smile on my face.

Dining Bar Akira by Tomoko Yamashita

What a fun read! There's so much I love about this story. The artwork is wonderful, with its expressive, scratchy lines and rough boys. These guys live life and it shows in their faces. It also has comic touches, and gentle moments sprinkled with the more outrageous angst and outbursts. The cast of characters are quirky, and the secondary characters add depth to the story. This makes me a very happy fangirl.

Now, for the two main guys...Akira Koji is the manager of the Dining Bar cafe. He's thirty-two and feels his life is in limbo. He's not sure what he's doing and feels stuck. Hmm - haven't we all been there. Then one late night, a part-time waiter, Torihara, confesses his attraction for Akira.

Well, that's certainly throws a wrench in Akira's life. The rest of the story is how Akira tries to sort out his feelings for this young guy. Not only is Torihara handsome, he's also too young for him. And, he's a guy!

Akira panics. He's at a crossroad in his life, and just maybe, if he makes the wrong choice he will never be able to turn back. But somehow, he can't seem to get Torihara out of his head.

I'm really enjoying many of NetComics boys love, that I went a purchased three more books from them!!! I'll be reveiwing them as well.

La Satanica is a one-shot from Momoko Tenzen. It's another nice book from Tenzen. I can only give her high marks - for her artwork alone, but she also writes a good story. But I admit, I just love gazing at her boys, and especially if they have long hair. Now, I know I've been rambling on about how much I love artwork that shows more realistic expressions and rugged lines in the face of the characters (like Est Em), but I enjoy the other end of the spectrum, too. When done well - and Momoko Tenzen can really draw the pretty boys but make them so appealing and sexy at the same time.

This is a typical high school story - best friends that find more than friendship. Mashita and Matsushima have feelings for each other, but neither are willing to admit it. Now, the blurb says that Mashita likes to play mind games with Matsushima's feelings, but I didn't really feel he had that much of a devil inside of him! To me, he didn't have a mean edge to his personality, but rather, he can't express his feelings very well. He's serious, smart and scared, since he isn't experienced in love. Matsushima is the romantic one, and much more experienced when things get hot and heavy. One of my favorite panels is the boys kissing for the first time - it's the last scene of Morning Lime. Check it out, and let me know if you agree with me. :) An added bonus is Mashita's really cute dog - Chez!

Liberty Liberty by Hinako Takanaga

Liberty Liberty! is a typical Hinako Takanaga story. It's sweet and funny and the uke is completely endearing.

Itaru has big bashful eyes, blushes easily, is pretty hapless but very sweet. Kouki, a grouchy prickly cameraman discovers Itaru passed out in a garbage heap while working on a documentary. They end up room mates and co-workers. Itaru falls for the enigma camera man, but he can't figure him out. As Itaru worms his way into the hearts of Itaru and the quirky tv crew, he becomes indispensible. But what about love?

I always enjoy Takanaga's artwork with her generous use of shading and her dark and light pen strokes.

Liberty Liberty! is a comedy, and gentle love story. It's sweet rather than sexy, and is rated for older teen.

Age Called Blue by Est Em

Wow! Wow! Wow!

I shouldn't be surprised how much I loved Age Called Blue. What's always amazing is Est Em's story telling as well as her European style boys. They are rugged, real and their faces lined with the harshness of living. Yet, they are so incredibly sexy.

This volume focuses on musicians and each story intertwines with the others, so it feels like a one-short instead of separate stories. It's about destiny, fate and choices, and how two people in love must makes sacrifices. The main characters are Nick and Billy, star-crossed lovers but connected by their love of music and each other.

I can't say enough about Est Em's body of work. It's edgy and angst-filled, and always surprising. If you haven't read any of her work, pick up one of the books!

I'm a real fan of Momoko Tenzen's art. Now, this is an anthology, which usually drives me crazy, but I didn't really mind the short story format with this particular volume. These are sweet tales of friendship turned into love, with heartache thrown in. Nothing earth shattering that turns yaoi on its head. No harsh words or terrible angst...but a slow unveiling of love's confession

Tenzen's artwork lends itself to this dreamy kind of love. Light, airy, artistic lines and wistful expressions...there's something very delicate about her boys. I never get tired of looking at them.

Dog Style 3 by Modoru Motoni

I forgot how much I enjoyed Dog Style until I picked up the last volume. Kitty Media delivers hot, sexy and snarky yaoi. This third volume concludes the love story between Chiaki and Miki, and what a love story. If you like your yaoi well-drawn out and hot, you should enjoy this series. This is the last volume of the series and the story ties it all together with a wonderful red ribbon.

The story is fast paced and has a cast of characters, all well drawn. It's chock full of wonderful scenes. Motoni's artwork is sensitive and expressive. I love the facial expressions of Miki and Chiaki. And, she had me guessing what was going to happen between these two boys until the very end! That's pretty impressive when so many yaoi plots are predictable.

Exotic and Delicious Fater by Ryoku Tsunoda

I had enjoyed Ryoku Tsunoda's Where Has the Love Gone? so I was looking forward to Exotic and Delicious Fate. I wasn't disappointed. Exotic and Delicious Fate is illustrated with the same light strokes as Where Has the Love Gone?, the difference is in the story. Exotic doesn't start off with a forced sex scene as the other book, which sets the light-hearted tone of this volume. And, the characters are more likable at the very beginning of the story!

The two main characters are total opposites and this creates the tension between them. Kaoru Miyagi has only a middle school education when a benefactor takes him under his wing and gives him a job at the upscale Tachibana restaurant. Within eight years, Miyagi worked his way up and now manages the restaurant. He's passionate and very dedicated to his job and to his benefactor. Enter a new chef, Kasuga, from the sister restaurant, and Miyagi's world is turned upside down.

Kasuga is a straight forward guy and he's instantly smitten with Miyagi. Miyagi is mortified that a guy is hitting up on him. He wants nothing to do with the immature, impulsive chef. Then he finds out Kasuga has secrets, and answers to some very personal questions about Miyagi's past.

There are many warm and humorous moments between Miyagi and Kasuga. Miyagi is forced to reevaluate who he is and where he belongs. By the end of the book, I was rooting for Kasuga and the ever so straight-as-an-arrow Miyagi.

As an extra bonus, there's an interview with the mangaka, reader's favorite scenes and other funky and fun tidbits.

Ze Volume 3 by Yuki Shimizu

This is by far one of the best yaoi to come out this year. I love how Yuki Shimizu weaves the many complex characters into a fascinating story. And, the artwork is stunning.

Volume 3 turns toward the dark side, and we come to know the elusive, scary Genma. He is indeed not a very nice person. He's arrogant, rough and really a brute. He takes out his sexual pleasure on his dead father's kami-sama, Himi. Himi doesn't know how to take his new kotodama, who torments him. He doesn't understand why he hates him so much?

As the story unfolds the reader gets to see another side to Genma. The past is revealed, but more secrets are introduced. The story just keeps getting better. I also liked how my feelings changed about Genma when I began to understand his past. Shimizu's characters are not just black or white but shades of gray which makes them far more interesting.

This book is sexually explicit and sizzling hot compared to the first two volumes!

Steal Moon 2 by Makoto Tateno

Makoto Tateno always delivers an A-one story. Within the complex plot is a puzzle, and is the key to the happily ever after. I love how she weaves her themes throughout her stories. It's immensely clever for yaoi and immensely satisfying. And she IS the angst queen. Her heroes are forever fighting their desires or having to put duty above love.

This volume ties up the story of Coyote and Nozomi. It also features a wonderful cast of characters that support the urban fantasy world she has created, and ties in Lahti and Kai from Blue Sheep Reverie. (I can't wait for this second volume for these two are my favorite reluctant lovers.)

Coyote and Hermes have betrayed Nozomi, and now Nozomi finds himself alone. Well, not really alone, for the Isis computer has been reactivated and is now watching the city. Lahti convinces Coyote to join him in getting back Kai and finding out the truth. Coyote and Hermes aren't really who they seem to be, so many secrets confusing the situation. Can Nozomi ever trust Coyote again, even though his love for this double-crossing soldier is still strong and sure. Can Nozomi save Coyote and unravel the mystery behind the creation of Isis?

The artwork is distinctly Makoto Tateno. I happen to like her style and think her men are beautiful while retaining their masculine charm. I highly recommend this series, especially if you enjoy a complex plot, plenty of angst and sensuous heroes.

This is a beautiful book.

Cigarette Kisses by Nase Yamato is a long awaited yaoi released by Deux Press. And, like most of Deux Press releases, it's high quality in the translation and printing. The shades of blacks are rich and seductive, as is the artwork. It's a love triangle and all the boys are very pleasing to look at, as well as having unique personalities. I liked all three of them. My only complaint is that one has to be left behind! (But I won't tell you which one!)

Yusuke and Soji have been friends since junior high school. They are inseparable through college, but when Yusuke gets an invitation to Soji's wedding he's devastated. He hides his feelings of love and is the best man at the wedding. Afterwards, he breaks away from the friendship fearful his jealousy will be discovered.

Years later, they meet up again in their company smoke room.

Their love for each other remain unspoken. Tensions run high every time they meet up in the smoke room. And now their childhood friend Masahito shows up, trying to win over Yusuke's heart! What's Yusuke to do? Masahito is persistant but can Yusuke forget his life long love?

On Bended Knee by Ruri Fujikawa

I enjoyed On Bended Knee by Ruri Fujikawa. This collection of short stories don't break any ground but the artwork makes up for it. The semes are very handsome and masculine and the ukes beautiful and delicate. And, very expressive.

The main story was my favorite, because it features a very tall, broad shouldered seme who is Chinese and dresses in all those lovely flower and brocade outfits. Yummy.

It's the typical bodyguard and client love story, although these two are childhood friends. Hibiki is the bodyguard who serves Wu Xiong, an influential business man who conducts his corporation in Japan. Hibiki has dedicated his life in serving Xiong and vows to protect him against his enemies. Danger heats up when Xiong is to be named the head of the family's corporation. Hibiki is agitated because Xiong doesn't take the impeding danger seriously. Instead, Xiong spends his time flirting with Hibiki. Then as danger encroaches the tables get turned.

If you want a light read with sexy men and hot sex scenes, then pick up this book.

Wow, it's been ages since I've posted a review! That's what a dry spell it's been for yaoi. I've spent my time reading lots of gay fiction but I've been biting at the bit for more yaoi. I'm happy to write that I've finally read a book that was really delightful.

Tale of a Waning Moon by Hyouta Fujiyama delivers with a fun, humorous, warm hearted fairy tale, complete with Coon and Cymric, two adorable but feisty moon cats :)

Ryuka is a jilted young lover whose girl left him for a rich man. Drunk on booze one night, he stumbles to the "Wishing Hill" and speaks out loud his wish for a true genuine love. To his dismay, the next morning he wakes up and realizes he's been enchanted by the Spirit of the Last Quarter Moon, Ixto! This begins a wacky crazy journey toward Ixto and his true heart.

I've read everything by Hyouta Fujiyama that is available in the US. I've always enjoyed her work and her stories. This one is different that it's the first fantasy I've read by her. Usually she focuses on high school or college boy's love.

This is a solid story filled with crazy characters that you actually care about. Coon, the moon cat, is adorable and so darn *cute*. And Ixto is how I like my seme - older, handsome and looks good in his long military style overcoat :) Very forceful, but tempered by the rules he must follow in his world.

Yen Press does a good job of the translation, it's very clean and free of aggravating typos. There's even a translation list in the back of the book which is very helpful. This is a series, but I'm not sure how many volumes? Volume 2 can't come soon enough.

Love Control 2 by Ai Hasukawa

Those of you who know my taste will undertand why I gave Love Control a 4 rose review. I'm a sucker for older, adult men in love. Both men are handsome, and although emotionally they may act like teenagers, they are successful business men, and very talented at what they do. I like my semes very muscular, broad shouldered and tall, having an overwhelming presence over the uke.

I really enjoyed reading the two volumes back to back, giving the story more weight than just reading the first volume alone. I had no idea there even was a volume 2, and was pleasantly surprised to find it on the shelf.

The two men, Okumura, the director, and Yamashiro, the designer, are involved in a full blown romance but they won't admit it to each other. Both are too proud. It takes a third wheel to breath fire into their romance. The brash and forward bartender, Sasatani, puts the moves on Yamashiro forcing Okumura and Yamashiro to be honest with their feelings.

It's a simple story about jealousy and conflicts that arise from unexpressed emotions. The artwork isn't my favorite. At times Okumura's facial expressions appear out of proportion, but volume 2 is better executed artistically.

Rated 18+ (but really, there's hardly any sex at all in this volume!)

Color by Eiki Eiki and Taishi Zaou

Color by Eiki Eiki and Taishi Zaou is entertaining. It's more like a summer read and doesn't have the heavy handed angst or hot sex of some mangas. The two boys, Takshiro and Sakae are likable and very cute. Tender moments come to mind when I think of his manga. Especially the panels of their first kiss. There are many wonderful art images in this good-size book of over 200 pages.

The story begins at an art gallery where Takashiro Tsuda sees a painting titled "Color", one very similar to his own painting that he's exhibiting with the same title. He's enamored with the painting and the artist, even though he hasn't met 'her'. Takshiro soon learns this artist is a 'guy' who goes to his school - Sakae Fujiwara. They both are immediately drawn to each other - having a profound connection. But is there a future for two soul mates who are both are boys?

I really enjoyed the 'after thoughts' and ramblings of the two mangaka's Eiki Eiki and Taishi Zaou! It will be fun to see what else they write together, because they seem to have so much fun together.

Sense & Sexuality by You Higashino

Sense & Sexuality by You Higashino has nothing to do with Jane Austen's Sense & Sensibility. It is set during the Japanese Taisho Era (1911-1925) - years after the Regency period which is so popular among today's romance readers. Just so you won't be disappointed ;)

It's refreshing to read a story where TWO beautiful and handsome men vie for attention, love and each other. Hanamura and Takakura are childhood friends and rivals. They are both sexy, beautiful, noble and rich. They relish in competing for the same man, and they place bets to see who can win their target's affection first.

The first half of the book are short vignettes that focus on these 'bets'. The stories lead up to Takakura's confession. So it comes to Hanamura's complete shock when Takakura confesses his lifetime love for Hanamura. How do two semes make a relationship work? One of them has to give in - but not without a fight for dominance.

I love that You Higashino draws Hanamura and Takakura as mature, older men. They are both tall, muscular and yummy in a tux. The setting guarantees many gorgeous men in formal dress. I'm really tired of the high school romances flooding the U.S. Market these days. Not unless they are done extremely well - like Hyouta Fujiyama's works. I miss the mangakas that feature more mature men in their stories - Shiuko Kano, Youka Nitta, Shinri Fuwa. (Okay, I'll get down from my soap box now).

Like most of Kitty Media's publications, this one is hot and sexy. The 18+ rating actually makes sense. I look forward to reading Higashino's Gay Anatomy.

Living for Tomorrow by Taishi Zaou

Doki Doki published Living for Tomorrow by Taishi Zaou. This is another imprint from Digital Manga (June/801) - and I'm not quite sure how this differs from the June line, so if someone out there knows, please comment.

The artwork is rather nice. The main couple is attractive and both the seme and uke look like they are in high school, and the same age, which is rather refreshing. There is also the friend who is the sensible one. He's a nice comedic addition to the story, and I think he should of had his own romance, since he really deserved to be with someone!

High schooler, Tasuku Mizuochi secretly loves his best friend Ryouta. So what does he do? He beats the bejeezes out of Ryouta on a daily basis. This is how he hides his feelings. It made me wonder how he'd be if he hated someone? When he discovers his dead mother might have been an 'ageman' - a woman who brings good fortune to whoever she touches - he believes he has found a way into Ryouta's heart. By giving his best friend good luck, then they might have a chance at love. This, of course, leads to misfortune, mayhem and misunderstanding.

There is nothing about this manga that's going to shake up the yaoi world, but I gave the book a four star because it had more depth and action than the average high school plot. The artwork was very expressive, the facial features depicting true emotion. Especially well-drawn is Mizouchi, who's angst is shown in every drawn line.

Kirepapa by Ryo Takagi

Kirepapa I by Ryo Takagi is a delightful light comic romp of hidden love, and all out ridiculous coupling between a divorced dad and his son's best friend. I loved it anyway! I had to close my eyes to the ridiculous age differences between Chisato and Shunsuke. The divorced dad, Chisato, is in his thirties and looks of all eighteen, and Shunsuke looks like a business-elite twenty something year old. Who is the mature 'man' here? Obviously it's NOT Chisato.

I've already saw the anime, which follows the manga very closely. So, there were no surprises, but I enjoyed the book anyway. The artwork is lovely and the writing is well done. It's funny, even though the plot is so very unbelievable. But isn't so much yaoi written with ridiculous plots that we laugh at but secretly adore. *grin*.

Chisato is a devoted father to his adorable, innocent son, Riju. He thinks all of Riju's male friends are taking advantage of his son's naive nature, and so he doubles his efforts to get rid of Riju's friends using, uh, not so savory means. Like putting laxatives in their snacks! Bad father...very bad. There is ONE guy who is not fooled by Chisato, Riju's best friend, Shunsuke. Shunsuke who has his own secrets.

Deux Press did a good job in the translation and like always, they deliver quality manga. I noticed on their website they have many of their older mangas on sale for $5.00! Such a steal, so I hope you go online and support them. I'd like to see them stay in business, at least long enough to give us volume 2!

I haven't read to much yaoi lately. Nothing too exciting out there. So I was thrilled to read U Don't Love Me by Rankun. Like so many Korean BL mangas, this book features gorgeous boys in love and an added bonus; a story which keeps you turning the page. Storytelling is usually lacking in many Japanese yaois published in the U.S. (it's irritating how much great Japanese yaoi doesn't hit our shores - but that's another issue!) - but Korean mangas published here are chock full of stories.

This story starts out with Seyun's thoughts: Even if two things begin from the same place, there are certain "differences" that are bound to form. And no matter how much you know a person, that person can still manage to hide dark secrets. He's thinking about himself, and his childhood friend, Yoojin. And, his own dark secret. His loving 'feelings' for Yoojin. This secret can disrupt and hurt the boy he loves.

Even though they attend different high schools, Seyun and Yoojin make time for their friendship. Seyun is a cool, mysterious blond opposite Yoojin's athletic and dark handsome looks. Taller and more robust, Yoojin feels protective of the more delicate, frail Seyun, but unbeknown to Yoojin, Seyun had no problem protecting himself using his fists and temper!

Yes, this is another 'childhood friends in love' story, but it works on so many levels. The artwork is beautiful, the boys gorgeous, and the sex is steaming. There is actually a story line where the two characters actually have to change if they are too be together. The art consists of wonderful shades of dark and light, like Seyun and Yoojin. And the undercurrent of emotions drive the boy's actions as they pursue love and acceptance.

I enjoy Korean manga because their artists develop their stories as well as draw beautiful boys. So check this one out!

Hey, Sensei? by Yaya Sakuragi

Hey, Sensei? is a teacher/student pairing. Ho hum, a bit over done! But, there must be a mass of readers that love this pairing because this plot floods the yaoi market! It helps that the student looks older than a mere student. Homura is well-built, tall and handsome. He's also in love with his math teacher, Isa. Isa is an inexperienced virgin, a straight-laced guy. He's also gay, and at one time, dated Homura's sister.

Despite the typical story, I found myself chuckling at Homura's antics. Isa also has another side to him that comes out - a teasing, seductive wolf in sheep's clothing. It's fun to see the interaction between these two naive guys. And, rather sweet, too.

I enjoyed this volume. Yaya Sakuragi's artwork (Tea for Two published by Blu Manga) consists of bold, strong characters. She always has a sense of humor that shines throughout her books.

I was pleasantly surprised when I read this manga. I didn't have any expectations because I'd never read this mangaka's work. It's a typical cousin pairing but there's actually a meatier story involved. And, one that kept my interest. The artwork is expressive.

Tooru always found comfort being with his cousin Takara. Takara was a rough, strong boy and had devoted himself to alleviating Tooru's loneliness as a child. Takara had always watched over Tooru. Then Takara's father died, and he had to move away with his mother. A few years later, Takara returns to live with the now well-mannered Tooru and his family. Tooru's parents had gone abroad leaving the older son, Hajime, and Tooru to run the candy shop, and take care of their youngest, Futaba.

Takara doesn't take kindly to Tooru's parents abandoning them to go overseas. He's turned out to be cool, aloof and rude. Tooru's surprised when Takara confesses he had stolen money from the construction site where he'd been fired. He won't believe Takara is a thief. And, he goes out to prove it.

As the story unfolds, Tooru discovers the true nature of Takara, and the reason for his cool exterior. Takara discovers love and family. The story moves at a sweet, steady pace.

For a easy-going and fun read, this is a nice manga to pick up.

Ze Volume 2 by Yuki Shimizu

Oh joy, this volume is as good, or even better than the first volume. I LOVE it, and it's wonderful to anticipate the release of the following volumes. Ze has the right mix of comedy, angst, sex and bittersweet romance that will please the most jaded yaoi fan.

This volume continues the romance between Raizou and Kon. After asking to become Kon's "kotodama" master, Raizou troubles only begin. Between Kon's healing kisses and his growing love for Kon, Raizou is in constant state of arousal and confusion. It's really sweet to see him blush and want more from Kon than sex. He wants Kon to LOVE him. Yet how can a paper 'doll' experience love? Kon's confusion of what it means to love is the crux of this volume.

And of course, there's the rest of the wonderful supporting cast. It's nice to actually see a f/f couple featured as well! And one of my favorite couples is the dark, handsome Shoui and the fragile, beautiful cool Asari. I'm hoping their love survives but there is something very bittersweet about them.

Love Machine by Amayo Tsuge

Love Machine by Amayo Tsuge had me cheering for the young uke - a male android named Shiro. He's a very cute blond with a boyish face and cheerful disposition. And, so eager to please his owner - anti-social writer Kokuyo. (Why are all anti-social seme's writers in yaoi? *g*)

Of course, clumsy and cute Shiro gets under Kokuyo's thick skin, and endears himself to his grouchy master. Kokuyo opens up to Shiro, and begins to teach him how to cook and other such chores. They beging to work together, and this draws them closer. Interesting that it's the android who teaches Kokuyo to be more human.

Then a strange virus hits the android community, an Alzheimer-type of disease. Shiro is infected and is desperate not to forget Kokuyo!

There is a very sweet angst to this story. All the characters are endearing as you get to know them. I really cared what happened to Shiro. The artwork is expressive. Young, large dewy-eyed ukes paired with tall, dark and serious semes. Tsuge's artwork captivates her character's emotions in a very beautiful way.

I usually don't like boyish ukes paired with older men, but this one worked for me.

Breath Vol 2 by Chifumi Ochi

Breath Volume 2 is the continuation of Yanagi and Arata's sex buddy relationship. More, ah, like master and slave! Their encounter starts off one night at a bar, which leads to a night of HOT, raunchy sex. The next morning, Arata wakes up mortified that he made love with a guy! He runs out the door, and never, never wants to see Yanagi again. Which pisses off Yanagi.

Then, surprise, surprise, Yanagi runs into Arata when he goes home with Arata's twin brother, Takashi, for a night of more hot, raunchy sex. Arata treats him coolly, and this further pisses off Yanagi. He threatens to expose their one night stand to Takashi, and Arata is forced into a master/slave sexual relationship.

The first volume brings them together, the second volume shows the slow change in their sex buddy relationship. Arata's sweet nature is endearing, and breaks through Yanagi's resolve never to fall in love or get involved. Both of them are confused by their emotions for each other.

Takashi begins to get suspicious of Arata's behavior, and secretly finds out he's dating Yanagi. This is NOT good. To add spice to the danger ahead, Yanagi's ex-lover moves back to town. This is also NOT good. I smell revenge!

We need to wait until volume 3 to find out what Takashi is planning for his revenge against Yanagi. According to the publisher, Yaoi Generation, this is a five-volume series. With all the publishing houses closing their doors, let's hope we will be able to read all five volumes!

Manhattan Love Story and Suggestive Eyes by Momoko Tenzen

Both of these books have love vignettes strung together by a setting and cast of characters. I really enjoyed both books because of this. This works for me , especially if I have to read several short stories in one volume.

It's interesting to note that Manhattan Love Story was written and illustrated back in 2002. This is the earliest manga I've read of Momoko Tenzen's work. Her other mangas published in the U. S. are Seven and Paradise on the Hill. You can see the change in her art style, but always, is the delicate expressions and almost fragility in her character's faces.

She is also consistent in her writing and art. It's very quiet. Her stories move along slowly, revealing a sprinkle of insights into her characters. I enjoy her slower pace. Don't expect action, but instead, rare glimpses into people's daily lives.

In Manhattan Love Story, the stories revolve around a flower shop. Florist Dan "Diamond" is having a secretive affair with the owner, the handsome, powerful CEO, Rock Melville (love the names!). The trouble, Rock is a workaholic, and rarely has time to spend with his boyfriend. I love Diamond's looks - a delicate waif with long blond hair and glasses!

Suggestive Eyes revolves around a university. It's the story of Megumu Okazaki, a college grad student, and his affair with student, Hisashi Kina. Kina catches Okazaki on the rebound, and while he admits his love, Okazaki isn't sure how he feels until he decides it's time to break up! An added bonus, one story features a cat and puppies - and they are SO cute! What is it with beautiful men and their pets?!

If you enjoy Momoko Tenzen's writing and art style, you'll enjoy these two new editions.

Idol Pleasures by Fuhri Misasagi

Idol Pleasures by Fuhri Misasagi doesn't break new ground. But, what yaoi manga does these days? Still, it's a good book. The kind of publication Deux Press is known for - nice artwork, decent story translation and high production quality.

The artwork has many nice facial close-ups and expressions. It's the 'younger man falls in love with the older man' scenario. Both characters are attractive and the pairing are two fairly mature-looking guys.

The young idol - Koju Yagihashi - blond, blue eyed and cool, has a new manager - the straight, intelligent suit-wearing Hisaya Amagi. Amagi's sister plays a major role in this story, which is refreshing change of pace. Although she's a tyrant, albeit a nice one, she bullies Amagi into taking the manager position to Koju Yagihashi. Her real motive is to set up her divorced brother with a well-known movie star. Little does she know that her plan is about to backfire. Koju Yahihashi has fallen for Amagi, to Amagi's distress. He can't seem to escape Yahighashi's kisses! As cool and mature as Amagi is, behind those glasses are eyes of a wolf.

There's little sex and a lot of longing gazes and sighing going on. *grin*

Yokai's Hunger by Naono Bohra

Many yaoi fans have been waiting for a U.S. release of Naono Bohra's works. She definitely has a unique style, and I like that she features older men. It's refreshing, especially after reading a slew of mangas with very youthful looking boys - it's an epidemic lately. I'm an older reader, and really enjoy older men. Even her seme, a student, looks very mature. He's tall, dark and handsome with a very robust, muscular physique. Many of her men are drawn this way, and it's great change of pace from the more ethereal, feminine looking yaoi boys.

The story has a deep plot, and takes time to read. It's one of these volumes that I'll have to read a second time to pick up the subtext of the story.

Norito Ogami isn't what he seems. He's an average student with a 'not so average' problem. He attracts demons. This makes him a loner and an outcast. He's afraid of hurting others, and so he stays away from people. Then one night, a stranger appears before him with the promise of the "Sigil Oath". Koma, a handsome male beast in human form, will protect Ogami with his life, an oath made in a past life.

It's a meaty volume with plenty of characters, action and sex. I like that you need to pay attention while you read. It's not your average yaoi, and that is a good thing. And, the uke is a middle-aged beast no less. There is also a touch of humor interlaced withing the action-filled, fantasy plot.

Chocolate Surprise by Lily Hoshino

Okay, I'm rating this a four rose because of the artwork. The book is a series of short stories, which isn't my favorite - BUT - the art surpasses so many other mangaka, in that Lily Hoshino's characters are so expressive! You know what they are feeling in every panel - and it's a joy to page through the book, even if you don't read a word of it.

That said, there are times when her ukes are to young for me, even though they are 'of age' - but many of her eighteen year olds look much younger. I do love her semes, though. I don't know if it's because they look like the clean-cut, boy-next-store? Certainly they have a maturity to them, an air of superiority, because of their good looks. It takes me back to high school when I had a crush on the handsome football jock.

This series is a lot HOTTER than some of her previous works published in the U.S. It's very graphic. The main storyline (which I would have liked to be longer, of course) is about a group of girls playing a sexy game of "Mix Chocolate". They pass around a bag of assorted chocolates, and one has an aphrodisiac inside. If any of the girls pick it, they get to have sex with the hottest guy in school: sexy, mature Kakiuchi. But what happens when Ogasawara walks in on the game, and picks the lucky chocolate. Who will he decide to have sex with? Gee, that's a difficult question to answer!

Of the nine stories, many are silly, some are more serious and there's one fantasy. It's kind of nice to see women and girls featured in her stories, as well.

As always, Deux Press releases quality manga with sturdy paper, nice line resolution for the illustrations and good translation. Support Deux books! I'm hoping they stay in business. So check out their website!

Scandalou Seiryo University Class Reunion by Kazuto Tatsukawa

This is the continuation of Tatsukawa's series - Scandalous Seiryo University - and our characters are all grown up - and ah, how handsome they have become! For readers following the series, this story focuses on Tsuyoshi's younger brother, Kouki Misonoi, and their guardian, the older Hayakawa. Tsuyoshi's lover, Hajizume, who has matured into a very handsome man, plays a significant role and is very, very yummy to look at. An added bonus.

Scandalous Seiryo University Class Reunion begins with Kouki all grown-up and in graduate school. Yet, he still complains constantly about Hayakawa lecturing him on his childish behavior, and treating him like a kid. The story is full of misunderstandings and angst (mostly on Hayakawa's part). Kouki is rambunctious as ever, and very straightforward in his feelings, wearing his emotions for all to see. When he witnesses Hayakawa kissing another teacher, he can't understand why he's so furious. Lashing out at Hayakawa, he forces his beloved guardian to make a decision both may regret.

Unlike the previous volumes, this story has no sex scenes, zilch, nada. But, the artwork remains beautiful and expressive, and while the story is typical, it's entertaining. I love visiting 'old friends' and there are a sprinkle of new characters that hopefully will have their own stories in the future.

I'll be looking out for further volumes.

Our Kingdom 6 by Naduki Koujima

When I purchased this volume, I had to go back and read all five before starting this one! What a fun day I had...revisiting Rei and Akira and the rest of the gang! I forgot how fun this series was, and if nothing else, volume 6 reminded me. I had just reviewed Naughty and Nice (see my review below) and a light bulb went off - all Koujima's seme's are manipulating teases! Duh, I just hadn't really connected this idea before now.

Our Kingdom 6 by Naduki Koujima is more of the same. It's a fun volume and if you enjoyed Our Kingdom series, you won't be disappointed in this volume. There is something so sweet between Rei and Akira, that's it's heart-warming.

The story begins from where the last volume ended. Rei and Akira are participating in the school athletics festival. Of course, Akira is all gung-ho while Rei is passively bored. Then there's the usual antics - misinterpretation, miscommunication, shady characters, until all ends well.

What I really enjoyed was the side story about their best friends - Tamaki and Hiyori. Hiyori's secret is finally revealed, and what a surprise!

Naduki Koujima's artwork shines throughout the series. Her ukes are fresh faced and naive but stand up to their handsome, teasing semes. I like that ;)

Cut by Toko Kawai

Any story created by Toko Kawai rates a four or five star in my opinion. She can weave a great story in with her art. Far above so many mediocre works that are published in the U.S. I'm never disappointed in her stories and the beauty of her characters. There's just something so compelling about her boys.

Cut is more angst-based than many of her other stories I've read. It's a very bittersweet and poignant relationship that slowly becomes more.

Chiaki Sakaguchi appears as the smiling, always cheerful senior but within his inner self he carries a very dark, dark secret. Eiji Yukimura, a social misfit, hides an even deeper scar that's symbolized by the deep cut on his arm. The two become close in their misery and slowly discover that they can feel pleasure as well as pain.

I loved the darkness of this story as the two find their own liberation from their pain. It moves along quietly until the black moment - and the resolution made me smile. It was as quiet and subtle as the rest of the story. Through-out the book, I carried a bittersweet ache for these two.

Naughty but Nice by Naduki Koujima

Naughty but Nice by Naduki Koujima is a lighthearted BL story. The artwork raises my rating to four-star. It's expressive and beautiful, and a joy to look at. The story is the typical teacher/student pairing with a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde approach.

The relationship begins when Kakeru accidentally pushes his homeroom teacher into the river after seeing him being accosted by a group of punks. He carries the unconscious Wakasa to his home, and when Wakasa wakes up, he has amnesia. Kakeru, out of guilt, feels he has to take care of his teacher since he was the cause of the accident. Wakasa is just the type of guy to take advantage of a cute, naive student. In more ways than the obvious.

All of sudden, Wakasa's true personality comes out. A devilish tease, he makes Kakeru's life miserable. It's hilarious how many ways he can make Kakeru blush.

Who is the true Wakasa, the devil in disguise or the smiling perfect angel he appears in school?

The second half of the story will be published in Spicy but Sweet. Hopefully we'll see it here in the states. So many times I've invested in a great story and characters only to be disappointed when the publisher either go out of business or decides not to print the following volumes. There are rumors that Deux Press (Aurora) might close their doors, but they are still coming out with books, and nothing will be announced until Anime Expo in July. I'll be very sorry if they do. They always produce very high quality yaoi. So, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Future Lovers Volume 2 by Saika Kunieda

Okay, I LOVE this series, and I'm sad to see it's only two volumes. There's something about the couple, Kento and Akira, that is so endearing, funny and warm. Total opposites in every way, Kento and Akira somehow make it work. They are meant to be together, and Saika Kunieda makes their relationship mesh without it becoming irritating.

The art fits the characters, Kento being all male, rendered in bold, dark lines. Akira being beautiful and flamboyant has a streak of stubborn determination and spunk. He's drawn in lighter, more delicate strokes. The emotions that flit across their faces are worth the cost of the volume!

Somehow, Kento and Akira have survived a whole year together, and this is where the second volume begins. It's a series of short stories focusing on the ups and downs of a relationship. Can they survive the disdain of Kento's grandfather who isn't happy about his grandson's gay lover! Akira also is hiding family secrets. Kento's torn between pleasing his grandparents and taking care of his high maintenance lover. Who will win out in this war between Kento's affection?

The stories are wonderfully sweet and funny and sexy. Don't let the sweetness fool you into thinking there's no sex involved. Kento, to Akira's delight, becomes an animal in bed, and sexually they're great together.

Mr. Flower Bride by Lily Hoshino

I really like Lily Hosino's artwork and her stories. Her ukes, while definitely on the feminine side, are very kind, sweet and lovable. I can't help but root for them. Her seme's are handsome and wholesome looking, and she generally keeps her pairings around the same age.

Mr. Flower Bride, while a silly premise, works because of her deft story telling. The powerful Souda family always keeps to tradition. This is unfortunate for the younger son, Shinji, because his older married brother is having a boy. Tradition dictates if the older son has a boy to carry on the family name, then his younger brother has to marry a boy. In this way, there is no dispute of who carries the family name.

Poor Shinji, his bride is none other than his classmate and friend, Aoi Uno. Uno seems not at all fazed about the idea which irks Shinji who is not at all pleased about marrying a boy. At odds with each other, will Shinji and Aoi find a happily ever after?

There are four stories in this volume. I enjoyed the main story the best, but the others are entertaining, just very short. I will be buying the second volume in this series titled Mr. Flower Groom.

Ze Volume 1 by Yuki Shimizu

I'm absolutely delighted in Ze Volume 1 - and I anticipate a great story following the first volume. This is very different from Yuki Shimizu's Love Mode - and in many ways I'm enjoying this story more. Maybe because it's wackier and the characters are beautiful and more gorgeous. Maybe it's because there are a variety of interesting characters that could carry their own story in the future. Maybe it's because the main character, Raizou, is sweet and kind, and bewildered by the household.

And what a household!

As I mentioned, there are many, many characters, some with similar last names, so it can be a bit confusing. But hang it there. It's worth it. Like many yaoi story lines, it's a bit wacky when it comes to the paranormal elements. But isn't this usually the case?

When Raizou's grandmother dies, he goes to live in the Mitou mansion as a housekeeper. The occupants behaviors are all rather odd. Raizou doesn't know what to think about his new surroundings, and then he finds out the truth. Three of the residents are "kami" - healers meant to serve their 'kotodama' masters. But one of the kami, Kon, lacks purpose since he doesn't have a master to serve. Raizou takes an interest in Kon, and decides he will claim Kon to be his kami!Can Raizou fulfill Kon and give him a reason to live?

Pick up this volume if you enjoy funny, sweet, sexy, outrageous yaoi. The artwork is beautiful, the men sexy, their personalities unique. With so many pairings, you're sure to find a favorite. You won't be disappointed. It's the best that's come out of 801 Media for some time.

Pure Heart Volume 1 by Hyouta Fujiyama

I'm so excited to finally have yaoi to read and review! It's been a dry spell lately, and slowly, better stuff has been trickling in. I really enjoy Hyouta Fujiyama's work, and was delighted to get my hands on Pure Heart. For a first volume, it delivers a strong story line, and introduces the main characters, setting up a complex plot of love triangles, all center on freelance writer, Tozaki.

For one of his jobs, Tozaki hires Kurata, his high school crush and first unrequited love. They haven't seen each other since freshman year, but Tozaki recognizes Kurata. It takes a little longer for Kurata to recognize Tozaki, but when he does, he asks him out for drinks. Kurata tricks Tozaki into confessing his past feelings for him, and they end up in bed. But for Kurata, is it mere curiosity that he sleeps with a guy? Tozaki fears it's a one-night stand.

Maybe it was supposed to end up that way, but Kurata can't seem to leave Tozaki alone. Not when it comes to sex, which is all it is...or is it? Jealousy enters when Tozaki introduces Kurata to his ex-lover, Miyata. Miyata spells trouble but I'm not sure what he's playing at? Tozaki then meets with an ex-sempai from college to work on a freelance job, and life really gets complicated.

Fujiyama does a great job weaving in the past with the present. She uses close-ups to power up her emotional scenes, and they are beautiful. She shows real depth of emotion on her characters' faces. Her artwork seems to have improved from her earlier series. The pen strokes are bold and strong and confident. Her unique style gets better with age!

I also like that Kurata is a complex character - in the fact you don't know where he's coming from when it comes to his relationship with Tozaki. He's arrogant and cold and vulnerable. Tozaki wears his heart on his sleeve, but he's reluctant to say how he feels. It makes for a difficult time for both lovers.

I'm looking for volume 2 and hope June Manga doesn't wait a lifetime to release it.

A Capable Man by Hinako Takanaga

I give this one a three star because the short stories are not very original, although the artwork is pure Hinako Takanaga, with very young looking ukes and more mature semes. At least the couples are the same age, and it's not some older perv lusting after a young boy! That said, if you enjoy Takanga-sensei's work, you'll enjoy A Capable Man.

Shingo has always respected and liked his best friend, Koji. Koji is exceptional in every way; smart, athletic, and sizzling hot. There's a reason why Koji works hard at being exceptional. He knows Shingo's weakness for exceptional guys, and secretly he's been out to impress his wide-eyed, cheery, likable friend! One night in desperation, he forces himself on Shingo. Surprised, shocked, and hurt, Shingo has to decide how he feels for his not so exceptional best friend now.

A Capable Man doesn't live up to Little Butterfly, which, so far, is my favorite manga by this artist. I compare all her stories to this one. For some reason, the youthfulness of the couple in Little Butterfly seemed to fit the story and the situation, and I was able to buy into such a boyish uke.

Don't Rush Love by Mio Tennohji follows her release Meeting You, both published by 801 Media. After being disappointed with Meeting You, I was reluctant to buy Don't Rush Love. I was irritated by the uke in Meeting You, too much of a blushing maiden for my taste. But, I went ahead and purchased Don't Rush Love because frankly, there's been so little manga coming out this month (if any?) and I had to have my fix.

I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. The story follows the love relationship between Kusama and the new kid on the block, Morino. I like Kasama's looks - tall, dark and cool. Especially his twin, Riichi, who is more of a bad boy and very, very sexy. I would like to have seen more of Riichi *grin*

There's nothing new about the story: boy meets boy, Morino falls hard for Kasama, Kasama is in love with someone else, but they fall into bed anyway for nights of meaningless sex.

The back jacket blurb reads: "...that meaningless sex can happen in a spur of the moment, but only time builds a real relationship." Huh? Oh, well, that's boy's love for you.

As with most 801 books, there are some very graphic sex scenes that should satisfied the more hard core reader.

The saving graces - all the stories are about Kusama, his family and Morino. So the relationship has room to build, which makes for a more interesting read. Morino has spunk, and isn't a shy blushing virgin. I like a uke, who is strong emotionally.

The art style is typical Mio Tennohji. Her ukes have big soulful eyes and are slight in build. Her semes are tall, with elongated limbs and hands, almost exaggerated in form. I like how she's drawn her main boys in this story than in some of her other works.

Black Knight Vol. 4 by Kai Tsurugi

I really agonized over the rating, because in many ways I love Black Knight by Kai Tsurugi. It's set during medieval times in a mythical kingdom. It has a myriad of interesting characters and nefarious plots and political intrigue. So many of the ingredients I love in a story, but it's also very complex...maybe too much so. I got lost in the translation!

There are so many subplots I had to reread the book, which I don't mind, but I still got lost. Many of the characters look alike, and it takes some time to straighten out their faces with their names and their titles. The love story is pretty non-existent in volume 4. What is cool is the history of the older characters are explored further.

There is a love story, and it focuses on the youngest royal son, Chris, and his knight, Zeke O'Brien - the future Black Knight - the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a knight in the kingdom of Aran. But Zeke wonders if he's deserving of such a honor, especially when he sets his heart on Chris.

If you like historical dramas, then you should enjoy Black Knight. It goes beyond the stereotypical historical plots so often seen in yaoi. At least there's real 'meat' to the story and goes beyond the romance. It's about Chris and his need to prove himself worthy of being a king's son, and not a frivolous boy without purpose. It's about Zeke and his struggle between his love for Chris and his duty as the Black Knight.

The artwork is nice (I especially love the cover of a pensive Zeke), the settings rich in detail, and the actions scenes realistic.

I will be buying the next volume when it's released now that I'm hooked on the story. Blu Manga most often publishes yaoi series rather than one-shots, so I support them whenever I can. Their quality meets a high standard and they bring unusual manga to the US market.

Love Round!! by Hinako Takanaga

Love Round!! is an 'a-bit silly' Hinako Takanaga love story - not serious as Little Butterfly or You Will Fall in Love. It's pure comedy...crazy, zany and cute. As usual, Deux Press delivers on quality, giving readers a wide range of yaoi to chose from. While I prefer my boys older, mature and not quite so 'cute and ukie', the story made me smile. My four star rating is because the artwork is pure Takanaga (lovely blushing boys and expressive faces), the story is solid in pacing and deliverance, with a 'slapstick' twist thrown in.

Kaoru Komatsuna is the pretty boy who is very self-conscious of his feminine looks and girly name. He looks up to Kubo, the school boxing champ, because of his masculine, sculptured muscles and dark good looks. Unfortunately, Kubo doesn't know when or how to keep his thoughts to himself. By blurting out whatever he's thinking, Kubo ends up being on the punching end of Komatsuna's sudden bouts of rage! (There's a funny timeline of all the punches Kubo receives from Kaoru) And, boy, can Kaoru throw a mean punch for being so puny. This attracts Kubo's attention, and he's determined to recruit Kaoru into becoming a boxer. Can Kubo learn to think before he speaks in order to get beyond a first kiss with Kaoru?

Okay, it's kind of silly story, but very, very, very funny and cute. Ah, I've said the 'c' word already, haven't I?

It's rated mature, due to the few sex scenes sprinkled in at the end, but they are pretty mild and mostly suggestive.

Love Quest by Lily Hoshino

Lily Hoshino's artwork is very distinct. She has very feminine ukes, slight of build, large dewy eyes, and delicate faces. Many of them look like girls with their long hair and petite frames clothed in 'girly' dress. Her seme's tend to be taller, more masculine but not of the Shiuko Kano variety! They still range on the 'pretty' side, but oh so pretty.

That said, I really enjoy her stories. The books I've read have a fantasy element that adds substance. They are good, solid entertainment. Love Quest delivers on all these counts.

This is a high school love story without the high school setting. Akabane has just confessed to a girl, and she refuses because of her love for Moriya. Akabane is furious to have such a rival he doesn't even know, but before he can confront him, he's swept into a collision warp, along with Moriya! They fall into a magical realm of princesses, monsters and wizards.

The rub comes when the key to staying alive in this weird magical world is the exchange of body fluids...eh? Akabane and Moriya are forced to kiss to power up the princess who is keeping them from being eaten by monsters! This kiss starts Akabane on an whirlwind path to unexpected love.

This is a more light-hearted story than some of Hoshino's earlier works. There's not much angst, but the story moves along at a good page-turning pace. I see where Yen Press is going to published her Mr. Flowers series. I look forward to reading them.

Black Sun by Uki Ogasawara

Wow, Black Sun by Uki Ogasawara is one hot sex fest, starting from the first few pages. Knights, crusaders and Mediterranean warriors fight and love and conquer. I found myself getting absorb in the story despite its rather ludicrous plot. Oh well, what would we do without our 'over the top' yaoi for sheer pleasure. I'm not against sex for sex's sake if done well, and Uki Ogasawara does it well. I really enjoyed Vituoso di Amore, another crazy-filled plot with spicy sex scenes.

Her men have long thick eyelashes, bright sensual eyes and the seme is broad chested and muscular without being bulky. Yum. Her sex scenes leave nothing to the imagination, either. There's also a very cute side story that focuses on one adorable, but deadly panther, that adds a touch of humor to the situation. What a pet to have around the house!

The story begins with General Jamal Jan leading his Middle Eastern soldiers on a raid of the Gerun Fortress, a stronghold protected by Monastic Knights. Jamal seizes the castle, and acting commander, Prince Leonard, is captured. In order to save his men, he strips naked and performs 'the act' with Jamal in front of his men. Jamal keeps his word, and spares the knights, but takes the prince as a hostage.

Now a captive love slave, sinful feelings are stirring inside of Leonard for Jamal.

We can see where this story is heading, but it's very entertaining, and I found myself looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Silver Diamond 3 by Shiho Sugiura

I can't get enough of Shiho Sugiura's beautiful artwork. The story isn't bad either. This is the third volume, and it just keeps getting better. Silver Diamond is published under the Toyko Pop imprint, so I believe it will never get beyond two guys kissing, but you never know. There's a definite attraction growing between Chigusa and Rakan. Is it brotherly love? Sexual love? Who knows, but does it matter? The story drew me in from the first book, and keeps me turning the pages and anxiously awaiting the next volume.

All the characters are exceptionally drawn, and have their own beauty. They are lovely to look at, plain and simple. The fantasy element adds to the mysterious aura surrounding the art and story.

In book 3, we find Chigusa wanting desperately to take Rakan back to his world. To use him as a tool to dethrone the dark prince. But there is something more to his unwillingness to be apart from Rakan. Emotions are stirring inside of him. Emotions that long ago had turned cold. Now he finds they are confusing, but somehow, comforting. Rakan has his own worries. He fights the impulse to go with Chigusa and the gang, torn between leaving behind the human world in which he's comfortable, and having his friends leave him behind. Then, the dark prince show up in his world, and there's only one decision he can choose.

I recommend this series for the incredible artwork and the rich story. Especially if you like fantasy and beautiful boys!

Shards of Affection by Duo Brand

Shards of Affection by Duo Brand took me a couple of readings to see how I would rate this manga. The artwork brings out the emotions and angst of the characters. It's a story of strong passions tempered by tenderness. There are no quiet emotions in this book.

A group of warriors are especially chosen to carry swords infused with spirits, so as to exorcise demons and monsters. Some exorcists are more experienced then others. Asagi is a chosen one, and wields the sword infused with the spirit - Ninomiya. The priest Tachibana, an excellent fighter, stands by Asagi's side to aid in the exorcisms. He takes care of the more inexperienced Asagi for they are lovers. Tachibana is always by Asagi's side, and tends to his basic needs. He makes sure Asagi eats well, takes his vitamins and stays strong. He worries over his lover's frail constitution, for Asagi 'sees' the spirits while Tachibana only sees white masses. He desperate to protect his lover, wants to take over Asagi's spirit sword, so Asagi doesn't have to exorcise anymore, fearing for Asagi's life - but the sword only serves one master.

This is the first of several short stories that are integrated into one story line. It's clever how it's done. Not only do we get to read about the exorcists, but the story shifts to the spirits - who live like men but are housed in the swords. There is also a demon/human relationship that is intergral to the story. Each story leads up to the next one.

It's complex, and I had to read it more than once to figure it out. Maybe I'm slow on the uptake, but once I got into it, I really enjoyed the book. I love Duo Brand's artwork, the close-ups showing the in the character's eyes; pain, love and a myriad of emotions. This book lives up to their high standards.

It looks like June and 801 are dispensing with their dust jackets. I imagine it's due to economic decisions, and to keep their manga's at last year's prices. I rather pay a lower price for the manga than pay for a glossy, expensive book jacket, but I do miss the beautiful packaging! Oh well, we do live in hard economic times and this seems a small price to pay to be able to purchase yaoi in the U.S.

Barefoot Waltz and Where Has Love Gone?

Barefoot Waltz by Romuco Miike is a series of stories that are surprisingly good. You know my feelings about shorts, but if done well, they can be satisfying. Satisfying, these are. They are sweet, simple, tender stories, sprinkled with some hot sex.

The main story is about a shy author, Abe, contented with his quiet, uneventful life. The problem is he hasn't written a flowing word in ages. Well, he thinks his life is fine, who needs a lover or a relationship. Then like a whirlwind, Katsumi comes into his life all smiles and a big heart. Bright and eager, he slowly changes Abe's old habits and die hard convictions. Will it be enough to melt Abe's frozen heart?

The beautiful artwork fits the heartfelt stories. The other stories live up to the first one. All in all I recommend this book if you enjoy anthologies. I will be picking up another book by Miike, and hope she goes for a long one-shot :)

Where Has Love Gone by Ryoku Tsunoda is an enigma. I read the first two page, and was ready to throw the book across the room. I'm not too keen on 'forced sex' and that's how the book begins...but I turned the page and got hooked on the rest of the story.

Takayama is gay, but he hides it from his co-workers. The problem is he has a hard time not staring at Ishikawa, a no-nonsense, tough business man that workers admire and fear. While out on a date, Ishikawa runs into Takayama kissing a man! Now Ishikawa knows Takayama's secret, and he uses it to his, ahem, advantage. Of course complications occur and Takayama finds himself in involved in a sexual realtionship with a curious Ishikawa. Sex buddies, only? Problem is, Takayama is falling for Ishikawa.

Typical story line, yes, but I really enjoyed it. I liked the development of characters, especially the changes in Ishikawa. It's a love story with a lot of heat, angst, and sprinkled with humor. I was rooting for the characters to get together, and when I get that involved, the manga becomes a winner in my eyes.

White Brand by Youka Nitta

I'm an avid Youka Nitta fan, and despite all the sh** that's hit the fan over some of her panels, I'm still an avid Nitta fan. The sexual tension she builds between her lovers, the quality of her story telling, the angst and beauty of her men, these are all the reasons why I give her consistently high ratings for her work.

White Brand is a compilation of short stories. You can tell these stories were created years ago. Her artwork isn't as polished, her stories are not as angst-filled, or complex. And, she doesn't have any of those wonderful hot, steamy sex scenes I've come to associate with her work. That said, you can see the spark of brilliance in these older works. It's interesting to compare White Brand to her latest U.S. release - The Prime Minister's Secret Diplomacy.

There are several stories compiled in White Brand, all with very different story lines. This shows her ability to go beyond the typical yaoi plot. The main story, White Brand, focuses on two cousins, once best friends. After a family tragedy, Keshiki turns away from his cousin, Izuru, and all the joys he'd once had in his life. Years later, they find themselves at the same school. Can Izuru help Keshiki out of his darkness and into the light?

This manga will be added to my bookshelf next to all my Youka Nitta books. I hope with all my heart she'll return after taking time off - for she's one of the reigning queens of Yaoi. It'd be terrible to never get another Youka Nitta fix! Or read another Iwaki x Katou story, or find out what happens in The Prime Ministery's Secret Diplomacy.

Most of all, I miss her beautiful, sultry, sexy, sweet and sensational men!

Take Me To Heaven by Nase Yamato

Usually I don't like young looking, dewy-eyed ukes that look to be twelve years old, paired with an older, mature looking seme (although he's the same age as the uke!). It's just doesn't work for me. That said, I'm giving Nase Yamato's Take Me To Heaven a four rose rating. Why? It's so darn beautiful, and the story is tight. I found myself flipping through the pages just to drool over the art.

It's a high school romance with a supernatural twist. High school student Fumiya sees spirits. Seeing ghosts doesn't really float his boat. In fact, it frightens him to no end. So much so, he has ask popular, handsome Shogo, the son of a temple priest, for his help. Time and again, Shogo saves him. Along the way, Fumiya develops certain feelings for his savior. But Fumiya isn't sure what these feelings mean?

Through most of the book, Shogo irritates Fumiya with his constant teasing. There are funny moments, bittersweet moments, ghoulish moments, loving moments. If you are a Nasa Yamato fan, you will need to add this manga to your collection. If not, but you like cute ukes, a funny light-hearted story, you'll enjoy this one.

It's rated 18 + but the sex is more suggestive than overt. About three panels worth! Take Me To Heaven is rather sweet than seriously sexy.

I was very excited to get my hands on this manga. I really enjoy Dany x Dany, an Italian team that delivers unique stories and sensual artwork. Their men have thick lashed, almond-shaped eyes, slender muscular bodies, and Euro-punk hair styles. European sensibility lace their settings.

Anima, a futuristic steam-punk drama, is chock full of androids and sexy, nefarious men.

Popular and elegant dancer, Danya, lights up the stage, and lights up the eyes of Pulitzer Prize journalist, Patrick. Patrick becomes enamored of this beautiful dancer. But Danya has a terrible secret. He's an android. He could be terminated if anyone found out. It's illegal to impersonate a human. His owner, in order to make Danya a better dancer, has the Anima system installed in him so he can experience human emotions. Now, Danya can 'feel', and what he feels for Patrick is love. When Patrick finds out the truth, will Patrick expose Danya and send him to the android graveyard?

It's an erotic and beautiful setting, the clothing a cross between 80's glam and the Renaissance. The sex scenes are hot. The characters are sensual. The setting's panels are detailed and gorgeous. Anima is a great addition to my bookshelf. I look forward to Dany x Dany's next project.

Yaoirose's 2008 Top Choices

It's very difficult to choose the best, but in my opinion, the mangas listed in my slideshow are worth keeping on the bookshelf. I'm a writer, so the story is everything to me. I also need to feel an emotional attachment to the characters. The artwork must fit the characters and the feel of the story.

So, with this in mind, I've made my top choices from books published for the first time in the United States during 2008 (although they have been published in Japan eons ago). I have included long-running series that had a least one book published in 2008, one-shots and short series that ended this year.

Hero Heel 3 and Blue Sheep Reverie 1 by Makoto Tateno

Makoto Tateno is the queen of angst. Her boys always have to go through the wringer, sometimes three or four times, before they can find their Happily Ever Afters. This makes her books so entertaining and devastatingly romantic.

Hero Heel 3 is the conclusion to Minami and Sawada's love story. The finals scripts have been written for "Trans-Dimensional Warrior Airguard" and the casts will be going their separate ways. It appears that Minami and Sawada have found love with other partners, but like good fiction, nothing is what it seems. In the end, someone has to get hurt, but who?

The artwork is typical Tateno, and sometimes her guys look too much alike. But, besides this one complaint, I like her art style. What I like more - she writes a good story. Ever since I picked up Yellow, I've been a fan.

Blue Sheep Reverie by Makoto Tateno is the prequel to Steel Moon. It's the story of Kai, a sweet guy who finds himself in the rough and tumble city of 'Dawn' to search for his girlfriend's brutal killer. He meets up with the Sarte group, and becomes a body guard for one of the head chiefs, Lahti. For Kai, it's a ruse to get close to Lahti. For he believes Lahti killed his Maria.

It's an urban fantasy set in a punk style world littered with tough gangs and violence a normal way of life. It's a different setting from Hero Heel, but retains Tateno's classic angst style romance...with a very interesting twist.

I believe it's only one volume even through on the cover it's listed as volume 1. I can't seem to find any information on a second volume? It does read as a one-shot. Steel Moon, in which Kai and Lahti are secondary characters, takes place three years later.

Sea View by Ayumi Kano

I really went back and forth with this rating. Should I give Sea View by Ayumi Kano a four rose or a three rose? I finally decided on three roses because it didn't measure up to her her other manga, Passionate Theory. I really like her artwork. Her boys, with their large, emotional eyes and sharp features, are very attractive.

Sea View has two stories, both well written, although at times, the main story had some confusing panels. I'm not sure this is Ayumi Kano's fault, or June Manga's translation. It' published under the DMP Yaoi line, but there were no physical love depicted. Sea View is about friendships. These friendships could develop into more with time, but this isn't what the stories are about.

Kei's grandfather is a well-known architect. For years, Kei has been receiving notes from his grandfather that he cherishes. These letters influence his decision to attend the architect college where his grandfather taught. The school is also located on an island where Kei's grandfather lives. Kei's determined to meet his grandfather, but when he arrives on the island, his grandfather is no where to be found.

Kei meets the shy and aloof Michiru at the school. He discovers Michiru knew his grandfather, and loved him. Together they set out to find the grandfather but along the way, a secret is discovered. This secret almost destroys their special friendship.

I would have liked to see more romance, but nevertheless, I enjoyed the stories and the art. I would have given it a four star if there had been more development of the characters. Sea View is one of Kano's older stories, Passionate Theory published two years later in Japan. It shows a nice maturing of Ayumi Kano's art and story telling. I look forward to reading more of her work, hopefully her newer stuff!

I Shall Never Return 5 by Kazuna Uchida

You all know how I feel about this manga. I've given it high ratings for all the previous volumes! I Shall Never Return 5, the final volume, wraps up various story lines, and does it so well! I wasn't disappointed. When I received this volume in the mail, I sat down with all five books, and read them straight through. Ah, what a pleasure!

I noticed a change in Kazuna Uchida's art style, the artwork maturing as her characters. I haven't read a manga series as good as this when it comes to character development. Partly, because of the experiences Uchida's puts her characters through, and partly, because she takes five volumes in which to write Ritsuro and Ken's life stories.

In the final volume, Ritsuro and Ken have forged a stronger bond. They have resolved many of their previous issues and are looking forward to spending more time together. Trouble brews when Ritsuro's father finds out about his son's love for Ken. He's always believed Ken to be a very bad influence on his son. And now, they love each other!

How strong is Ritsuro's love for Ken? Is it enough to go against his family?

As I've said in my reviews for the previous volumes, the story is complex, beautiful, and a wonderful love story. It's set in exotic India, as well as Japan, the landscapes beautifully rendered. The secondary characters are just as complex and intriguing, and add spice to the story. No dialogue or character is without its purpose.

It'll definitely be a fixture on my bookshelf.

Red Blinds the Foolish by est em surpasses her previous book - Seduce Me After the Show. I would have awarded it a five star, but the story wasn't long enough. While I liked the other short stories in the book, I really enjoyed the story about Rafita and Mauro. I didn't get enough of these very complex and intriguing men.

The main story is about Rafita, a young, rising matador from Spain. He's never feared facing a bull until he meets a butcher, Mauro. As their relationship deepens, Rafita begins to dream disturbing images of him killing Mauro, depicted as the bull. His confidence begins to waver. Can Rafita overcome his anxiety and regain his confidence, or will his love for Mauro destroy all he's worked for?

Est em's gorgeous, sultry rending of her characters fit her story setting. Her Spanish men are drawn bold and graceful and dangerously sexy. The art is a complete 180 degrees from the typical Japanese style of beautiful, ethereal boys. The panels are similar to viewing a post modern piece of artwork.

Deux Press continues to impress me, especially when there's so much mediocre yaoi that's flooding the US market now. With many of the publishing companies shutting their doors, there will be fewer companies publishing yaoi. I can always count on Deux Press for high quality, entertaining manga.

Loveholic 2 by Toko Kawai

I've been in Yaoi heaven since I've returned from my vacation. I've read sooo many great manga recently, it's seems the roses have been blooming all over the place. Loveholic 2 by Toko Kawai gets my highest rating. Not surprising, Kawai's work is always above the norm, even in her lesser stories. Loveholic has all the elements of a heart warming love story. Angst, romance, humor, poignancy, heartache, joy...it's all here, warmly presented.

We find in Volume 2, Nishioka and Matsukawa are on their way to love. But as we all have experienced, love is never easy, and especially not for two headstrong, stubborn men! Work demands and jealousies soon get out of hand. Another stubborn issue is Nishioka's shyness, while endearing, leaves Matsukawa wondering if his love is one-sided?

This volume adds depth to Nishioka and Matsukawa's relationship. It shows what each man brings to the relationship. It's rare to get this in a two-part series, but Toko Kawai delivers, like always. I'll be reading Loveholic over and over and over, again. Especially on a day when I need to believe in true love and a HEA!

The highlight of You Will Fall in Love by Hinako Takanaga is her art. It's breathtaking, ethereal, expressive. While it's a typical BL's plot, the story moves quietly along, a perfect complement to her art. And, I love stories involving sports, especially sports that bring poise, grace and beauty to a character. Toward the end of the story, there's a beautiful shot of Haru in an archery pose. And, the close-ups of the boys are worth the price of the book!

The story follows Haru. He reluctantly agrees to fill in as a teacher for the high school archery club. At one time, Haru was a brilliant archer who competed for the national championship. But his love for his friend and male rival forced him to give up his archery and his dreams. Now back in the archery world, he becomes drawn to his rival's brother, Tsukasa. This opens up old hurt but opens a sliver of hope for Eros' arrow to aim for his heart. But can he get over his long-lost love?

Blu Manga focuses on series, and I love this about them. In a series, character development is essential. There will be a volume 2 to this series, You Will Drown in Love, continuing the romance. I look forward to it.

Winter Demon 4 by Yamila Abraham-Rhea Silvan

This last month, several final volumes came out, concluding many of the series I've been reading. I've been very, very pleased with the conclusions to some of my favorite series!

Winter Demon Vol. 4 is the conclusion to a fun, spicy series - a series where all the volumes held my interest. It's written by Yamila Abraham and the artwork is by Rhea Silvan. This is one of my favorite Yaoi Press published works, along side the Dany and Dany one-shots.

As the title says, it's about demons, hot, hot, sexy, lustful demons. It's sure to please the reader who likes their sex steamy and visual. But what I love, it's softened by the gentle, slowly developing romance between the monk, Hakuin, and the winter demon, Fuyu. The secondary characters also hold their own, and have their own interesting side stories that are cleverly woven into the main storyline. The story comes to its rightful conclusion in the last volume.

The gist of the story goes like this: The monk, Hakuin was tricked by the villagers and forced to sacrifice himself to the winter demon, Fuyu. He was raped by Fuyu. but was let go. A year later, Fuyu, with Hakuin's help, saves the village from fire demons, and this begins their journey on the road to forgiveness, redemption and love. A beautiful story mixed with some very lustful scenes :)

It's a series I'll keep on my bookshelf. The art, while different from the Japanese sensibility, is very expressive. The demons are very pleasing to look at. *drool* I highly recommend it.

Clear Skies Vol.2 by Akira Sugano and Etsumi Ninomiya

Clear Skies! 2 by Akira Sugano and Etsumi Ninomiya is terrific. I love this series! There's so many whimsical, quirky characters that can carry their own story. It's about family, and what makes up a family. It's not just about family by blood, or records. It's about brothers and friends, and their love for each other. It's funny, sweet, dramatic, and has all the elements of a wonderful, heartfelt story. The artwork fits the characters. It all comes together beautifully.

Taiga Obinata is an editor for a sci-fi magazine. He asks his one time high school friend, writer Shuu Asuou, to write for the magazine. He becomes Asuou's editor. The rub, they had past issues that never got resolved in high school. To make matters more complicated, Asuou shows up on his doorstep claiming to be married to Taiga's sister! Now he wants to live with Taiga and his brothers, and become part of the family. Tagging along is Yuuta, a strange, compelling young teenager, who shows more wisdom then the adults! Hint: the sister never shows up once in the story line, only in people's remembrance.

I love stories with lots of well developed characters. This story has plenty and I rooted for each and every one of them. I went out and bought the novel, too. Enjoyed it, but I especially liked the manga series. In the Afterword, it was hinted that there might be another book. Joy!

Deux Press picks up Cigarette Kisses:

Deux Press, the yaoi imprint of Aurora Publishing, has picked up the title Cigarette Kisses by Nase Yamato. Originally, Boysenberry Books, the yaoi imprint of Broccoli Books, was to release this title. However, with Broccoli Books shutting down, the title will be dropped from their list. Lucky for all of the Nase Yamato fans, Deux Press (who is already releasing her Take Me to Heaven in January 2009) was able to acquire the rights to the title, and fans can expect the manga to be released sometime in the second half of 2009.

Gentleman's Kiss 2 by Shinri Juwa

I'm back from my five week holiday! It's nice to be home. I have a load of Yaoi piled on my nightstand. I couldn't get my hands on it in Egypt, and only packed the three mangas I reviewed in November. I'm in Yaoi heaven with all of my catch-up reading.

The first of my reviews is Gentleman's Kiss 2 by Shinri Fuwa. I was anxious to get my hands on this one, because it's the conclusion to volume 1. And, I wasn't disappointed! It's so wonderful when a story goes in the direction of a satisfying happily ever after.

Volume 2 starts out with Touji Karasuma's announcement of marriage! (read my review of Gentleman's Kiss 1 to get the gist of the story). His secret lover, Homura Yasobe is heart broken over the news, but he's also a coward, not coming forward to express his love for Touji. Being in rival gangs, they have a Romeo/Juliet affair, and Homura can't see how they ever can be together. He's weak and sick about it, but consoles himself with his former employee, the handsome host, Kyoya.

This three-way triangle gets more complicated as the story progresses. Touji's 'arranged marriage' isn't necessarily what it seems, and the complex plot has an interesting twist to tie the story all together, neatly, in a bright ribbon of happiness. But not before gang wars, clandestine encounters and attempted murder!

The artwork is very good. The boys are handsome men instead of pubescent teenagers. It's refreshing to see three tall, virile men vie for each other. Yummy. The storyline kept my interest and had a very, very plausible ending. It left me completely satisfied. Sometimes Yaoi story lines tend to be so off-the-wall, it leaves me scratching my head in disbelief! Not this time. I look forward to reading more of Shinri Fuwa's work.

FreshMen by Yuuya is a college romance. Saito is excited about attending college and finally having the time to fall in love. There are plenty of cute girls at his school. But, then he faints into the arms of a fellow college student, Sato. His perception of what constitutes a lover is thrown off kilter as he gets to know Sato, and his kindness in taking care of him.

Sato believes Saito is fragile and needs looking after. He tends to Saito's every need despite his own busy work and school schedule. When Saito dresses in drag for a festival, Sato suddenly becomes aware of Saito's beauty. The attraction is there, but he doesn’t want to acknowledge it. Too bad for Sato, for Saito isn’t one to give up so easily, and becomes a force to be reckoned with.

It’s a fun story about two college guys in love for the first time. The artwork is expressive and unique. Saito has big, beautiful eyes and a pouty kissable mouth. His personality is lively and a perfect foil to the more serious handsome Sato.

The second half of the book focuses on Chomaru. The stories feature the same characters as Yuuya's doujinshi, Chomaru and Chomaru 2: Blue Butterfly. I'd like to get my hands on these to fill in gaps. I really enjoyed the feisty interaction between the two main characters, and would like to read more about them.

Lovers and Souls by Kano Miyamoto is bittersweet, beautiful and emotionally moving. Miyamoto has a very quiet writing and art style. I enjoy the quietness of her work. This manga will tug at your heart strings, for sure. It’s my third Miyamoto manga, and by far, my favorite. Her stories tend to focus on real life issues instead of wild and crazy plots. Not that I don’t like a crazy wild ride, but every so often, I enjoy reading about the real world, and people with real life problems and heartbreaks.

Miyamoto always has at least one main character that is undeniably gay, and not ashamed about his gender lifestyle. In Lovers and Souls, it is photographer, Matsuoka. He’s gay and asks straight college student, Shinomiya, to pose for him. Besides taking Shinomiya’s picture, he also offers him money for sex. Once Shinomiya gets a taste of making love to a man, he decides it’s not so bad. He begins to sell his body to guys for easy money. Why not? He’s never known love, or cares about his body. But slowly, Matsuoka shows him the beauty of life and love’s worth.

The second story, Eternal Moon and Tomorrow’s Sky, is a best friend romance. Nozaki confesses to his best friend that he’s gay. He’s not apologetic about it or ashamed. It was just getting too difficult to hide it. Anyway, Kai doesn't have to worry about Nozaki hitting up on him. He's really not Nozaki’s type at all!

Instead of getting upset, Kai gets curious.

Hanky Panky by Koreaki Kamuro is a series of short stories - vignettes about the initial get-together of two guys in love. Most of the stories tell of the events leading up to the first love confession and then, their first time making love.

The lead-in story is about geeky college student, Manaka. He’s always getting teased in school, especially by the popular guy, Doi. No one knows that outside of college, he transforms into a sexy, hot host club owner! His life gets complicated when Doi gets hired as a host at the same club, and begins to pursue Manaka. Can Manaka fall for a guy who gives him a hard time when he dons his glasses and becomes Manaka, the geek?

All the stories are rather simply written with no big surprises. This is the first I’ve read of Kamuro’s work, and her art style is beautiful. All her boys are lovely to look at. And, there are plenty of sex scenes for the hard-core fan girl. The stories are very short, a snapshot in time, really. This doesn’t lead to interesting character development, and this is one of the reasons I can’t give it one of my higher ratings. Rarely do I enjoy short stories over a well done one-shot or series. It’s just my preference. Deux Press always deliver a decent manga with good translation that is nicely packaged. Pick this up if you like breezy shorts with happy and sexy happily ever afters. You won't be disappointed.

I'm On Vacation

Hi All,

I'm on vacation for the month of November and will be posting only a few reviews as I travel through England and Egypt. I will be reviewing three books released by Deux Press. I was able to get a hold of them before I left for London.

London is cold, gray and drizzly, but this hasn't stopped us from sightseeing. I posted a picture of turning leaves on the path that leads to a Roman wall.

Living in the desert, I enjoy this crisp weather, and wearing gloves and a hat! Egypt will be more like home, the temperatures hovering around the mid-seventies. Ah, blue skies and warm weather, palm trees and sweet dates. I'm excited about seeing the pyramids and learning more about Egyptian culture.

Please check back when you get a chance. I'm already going through a Yaoi withdrawal, but I look forward to reviewing a lot more manga in December.

Shy Intentions and Romantic Illusions

Both mangas are published by June Manga, get three roses and are rated 18+ - but the sex is tepid not torrid. I'm happy to say these are one shot stories, and not an anthology of shorts.

Shy Intentions by Syouko Takaku tells the tale of a shy middle-school art teacher, Yoshiyuki. He's frightened to connect with people, and keeps to himself, afraid to appreciate the beauty in the world. Then he catches the eye of sauve furniture designer, Kaoru.

Kaoru wants nothing more than to show Yoshiyuki beauty and passion. He begins to show up unexpectedly in Yoshiyuki's life, and nudges Yoshiyuki out of his shell.

The artwork is nice, the story is sweet more than sexy. I enjoyed this manga but it didn't have the WOW factor for me.

Romantic Illusions by Reiichi Hiiro is one of the weirdest stories I've read in a while (besides Love Pistols). It's touted as a dysfunctional comedy, and it's certainly lives up to this billing.

Yu suffers multiple personalities, but the strange thing is, he is aware of them! When he's not himself, he is Kaname, a high powered attorney, or Ryo, a playboy with a short temper and a very active sex life. They can all talk to each other, and have carved out a decent life, each supporting each other.

Until Yu meets a handsome man, Sugo. This is when Yu's life gets complicated. As his relationship develops with Sugo, Kaname and Ryo feel their very lives are threatened. They won't go down without a fight for their beloved Yu!

It's crazy and cute and complicated. I enjoyed the story and the art, and if you want different, then this manga's for you.

Sweet Regard by Juji Fusa

Sweet Regard by Juji Fusa is about a brother's love for his sister and his reluctance in having to accept her hasty marriage. Then a freak car accident takes his sister's life, and Kohei struggles to mend the hurt of this tragedy. He finds himself alone- no family, no lover, only his despicable brother-in-law, Shingo.

What he least expects is to find Shingo at his doorstep wanting to pay his respects to his wife by taking care of Kohei. Suddenly, tall, dark Shingo is always showing up at Kohei's house, waking him up in the morning, providing a box lunch, cooking him dinner, treating him like a wife! Once a reluctant intruder in Kohei's life, now he's starting to rely on Shingo. Feelings between them become complicated.

It's sweet more than sexy, and the relationship between the boys moves along at a slower pace then most. Kohei feels a push-pull emotion for Shingo. The artwork doesn't thrill me, but it doesn't distract, either. I didn't give it a four star because the artwork, characters and their actions didn't resonate with me. It isn't a bad story, but it just didn't make me sigh with delight!

Passionate Theory and Lover's Pledge

Passionate Theory by Ayumi Kano starts out to be the usual high school unrequited love story. You have stoic Kanoh, who suddenly is distancing himself from his best friend, Midori who wants nothing more than to study overseas. But to add to Midori's hardship, his busybody cousin and high school math teacher, Hanabusa, lectures him daily.

The relationship between the three boys raises the story above the usual high school boy's fare. Especially the motivation behind Cousin Hanabusa meddling between Midori and Kanoh.

What I enjoyed was Ayumi Kano's very unique art style. It's breezy yet bold, if that makes any sense! The book cover gives you a good idea what the art is like. The juxtaposition of the panels is very effective and gives weight to the story. Many panels feature the character without dialogue. Again, very effective in conveying emotion.

I definitely will be be on the lookout out for more work by this mangaka.

Lover's Pledge by Kae Maruya gets high marks because of the artwork. It grabbed me from the first page. It's a series of short stories, which usually doesn't fulfill my need for good character development. Surprisedly, in this manga, the short story works. Kae Maruya does a good job penning a satisfying story even if they're short.

The main story is about party boy, Kazuto, who winds up in bed with a business man, Takasugi. It seems Takasugi has bought Kazuto's services for a month! But don't think this is the usual 'man buys young lover and they fall in love' - it's not. It's actually a very charming and endearing love story.

Even though they are close in age, Takasugi lives in another world, far from Kazuto's reality. Successful since his early twenties, Takasugi has never known anything but having to focus on succeeding. Kazuto shows him another side to life.

The other two stories are satisfying, even if they are high school stories :) Can't seem to get away from this plot, but at least these are above the norm. In Prescription for a Kiss, the bad boy best friend emits a very sexy aura. Very nice to look at - *grin* In Too Close for Love, the shortest story, tells of a stern and serious cousin who looks after his younger cousin's welfare, even though it's not always appreciated.

This is a 18+ rating, but is very mild in the sex department.

Vassalord 1, Vampire's Portrait 1, Pathos 2

Vampires, vampires,vampires, who'd of thought I'd have so many vampire stories to review in one month. It's appropriate fare for Halloween, so I'd thought I'd review them all in one post! The three manga's couldn't be more different.

I'll start with Vassalord 1 by Nanae Chrono (also created Peace Maker). This is an action fantasy featuring a cyborg vampire, Charley, who works for the Vatican in getting rid of those other pesky vampires and dirty creatures lurking in the dark. Huh? Oh well, it's manga, and crazy plots are to be expected. His antagonist and Master is vampire and playboy, Johnny Rayflo. Great name! Charley's only source of blood is Rayflo, and this creates some sexy pairing between the two.

Together the devilish duo fight crime spiced with a lot of action and comedy. It's very entertaining and sometimes confusing, but complex stories tend to be this way. The artwork is hard-edged and sexy and bold. It fits the darker mood but don't worry, there's plenty of humor to soften the edgier scenes. I look forward to volume 2.

Vampire's Portrait 1 by Hiroki Kusumoto has the same hard edged graphics as Vassalord but focuses less on action and more on the relationship between the mysterious handsome vampire, Sein, and innocent portrait artist, Lou.

Sein asks Lou to paint his true self - but what is his true nature? What you see on the outside isn't what he is on the inside. Regardless, when Lou finds out Sein is a vampire, it doesn't discourage his love for Sein. As Lou is drawn toward his art patron, Adam enters the picture. It seem Sein has a contract with Adam; he creates music for Adam's blood. Is this all there is to their contract, or is Adam hiding other nefarious intentions?

It isn't a sweet love story, but a tale of blood lust, jealously and betrayal. It's hard to know who to trust. There are gory, blood curling graphics but also sweeter moments that punctuate the dark and dangerous mood. Lou begins to loose his innocence and has to find an inner strength of will to fight Sein's enemy.

Pathos 2 by Mika Sadahiro concludes the series. Ace has come of age and leaves school to go home to his vampire brothers, J and King. All he desires is to become a vampire and live with J for eternity. Nothing else motivates him beyond his love for J.

I was disappointed in this volume. I didn't feel Ace developed in maturity or character. His love for his other brother King all but forgotten in his pathos to be united with J. I felt sorry for King, being thrown aside. The way Ace treated his friend from school took an ugly turn, and also left me wondering what happened to Ace's humanity?

Maybe that's part of becoming a vampire, you lose the soulful side of your heart. Ace seems to have no remorse for his actions, and this left me cold.

I enjoyed the first volume compared to this one. In this manga, I liked the flashback stories of the three boys more than the main storyline. The main problem I had with this manga is that I didn't warm up to main couple, J and Ace.

Oh My God! 2 by Natsuho Shino

Oh My God! 2 by Natsuho Shino is even more delightful than the first volume. The storyline takes an interesting turn as we find out more about Yuto's mysterious powers. Yuto's high school life becomes a lot more complicated. Add Jade and Rin battling for his affections and Yuto has his hands full!

Numerous low level spirits begin to infiltrate the Hikami household. Strange red balls show up around Yuto and cause dangerous havoc. Jade and Rin are worried for they're not sure what's going on. They stick close to Yuto when they're not yelling at each other. They're jealous of each other's affections for Yuto, but deep down, both are kind hearted and want nothing more than to protect their master. And it seems more and more, he'll need their protection as strange otherworldly men appear.

There are a couple of delightful side stories about Rin's guardian spirit, the black raven, Kyo. Ever since he's been living with Yuto, his powers are rejuvenated, and he's able to turn into a beautiful boy for a certain period of time. And, he's adorable!

Oh My God! is cute and funny and the artwork is lovely to look at. This isn't a sexy romp between gods and humans, but a light hearted comedy of friendship and love. It makes me smile and that's sometimes just what I need .

Mister Mistress by Rize Shinba

Mister Mistress 2 by Rize Shiba surpasses its first volume. I'm very happy when this happens. So, if you liked the first volume, you're going to love this one. The incubus, Rei, starts showing his human side and Fujimaru begans to question his feelings for his demon-lover.

It's steamy, sexy and funny when you hook up a horny teenager with a sex-crazed incubus. It's even more sensual when the demon is dark and handsome and the teen blushes with wide eyed innocence. What a combination!

In volume 2, Fujimaru starts to realize he has the power to erase Rei from his life. But, does he want to? And what are these disturbing feelings he has for Rei?

Fujimaru's youngest brother is featured through-out and is a hoot.

It's a hot demon love story. Rize Shinba's artwork is delectable like her characters. The expressive beautiful close-ups reveal without a doubt the character's emotional feelings.

Kiss All the Boys 3 by Shiuko Kano

Kiss All the Boys 3 is the final volume in Shiuko Kano's crazy yaoi romance. And crazy it is - love triangles, a father vs. son relationship, and plenty of emotional twists and turns.

You can't go wrong with a Shiuko Kano manga. She's constant in giving us sexy artwork and emotional satisfaction. I've now read several mangas by Kano-sensei, and she doesn't scrimp on her story lines, while supplying us with plenty of smutty sex scenes. The sex eases into the story and is part of the plot, and not just 'stuck' in randomly. This is what I love about her work. Also, her hunky, manly men doesn't hurt the eyes.

I sound like a gushing yaoi fangirl, but I guess, that's exactly what I am. I read so many BL mangas every month, and so when I find one that shines above the average, I gush! *g*

The main character, Tetsuo, has a dilemma. He's a hetrosexual who only orgasms with men. Add to this angst, he has wet dreams about his son's best friend and secret crush, Tama. Not only does Tetsuo have to sort out these crazy feelings, but his sex buddy, Momoyama loves him, and so does his best friend, Enomoto.

All this is written with extreme, over-the-top comedy. My only disappointment is the pairing I wanted to see didn't happen. But hey, I can overlook this. The conclusion grabbed my heartstrings and left me satisified.

Gentleman's Kiss 1 and Clear Skies 1

Out of all the pile of manga I bought from June Manga at Yaoicon, these are the two that stand out from all the rest that I have read so far (I have three more to go).

I kept staring at the book cover of Gentleman's Kiss knowing I've seen this art style before. Finally it hit me. It was Shinri Juwa's work, who also did the art for Yebisu Celebrities. There's lots of yummy men in that series, too.

Shinri Juwa's men are drop-dead gorgeous, and the two main characters live up to her artwork. They are very masculine and have ruthless, strong personalities to match their appearance. It makes for exciting interactions between them. There is the uke, but he's no push over, and I wouldn't want to cross him when angry. *g*

The story focuses on the love affair between Homura Yasobe and Touji Karasuma. Their affair wouldn't be such a problem if it wasn't for their dirty little secret - they are the future leaders of rival Yakuza gangs. Oops. Now that does present a problem. If anyone found out, one of them would be accused as a spy, and the result, an all-out gang war.

Poor Yasobe is finding it difficult to sort out his feelings for Karasuma. Karasuma asks 'do you love me'? Simple, right. Wrong. Not when their affair is so risky and they're born enemies. It doesn't help that Yasobe is being pursued by the number one host from his club, Kyoya. He's also another cutie, and while he blackmails Yasobe into dating him, you can't really get too angry with the poor boy. He's desperate for Yasobe's affections, even to the point he'd risk his life to be with him.

It's so refreshing to have a relationship between two handsome, intelligent men. The end of volume 1 is touching and bittersweet. Along with Yasobe, you know there's trouble brewing on the horizon.

Clear Skies 1 is completely opposite of Gentlemen's Kiss in its story and artwork. While Gentlemen's Kiss focuses on the love story between two older, successful men, Clear Skies focuses on family love and affection. It's comedic with a dash of bitters, and the humor is sharp-edged. I haven't read the novel, so I don't know if the manga closely follows the novel.

Hot-headed Shima had left the family to seek her way in the world, leaving the eldest son, Taiga, in charge of the three younger brothers. Everything is going along just fine until one summer night, Shuu arrives on the doorstep. It turns out this timid guy is married to Shima. It seems he'll be staying awhile, along with his companion, Yuuta (who looks like a Yakuza!) The 'boys' can't believe their wild rebellious sister would marry such a quiet, timid guy, and he isn't welcomed into the family with open arms.

All Shuu wants is to be called 'father' and to be accepted by his new family. He was an only child and envious of Taiga's big family. Although they haven't seen each other for several years, Taiga and Shuu went to the same high school, and something happened between them, but neither on of the is admitting to it. Taiga is very suspicious of Shuu and is supposed marriage to his sister. Hmm - I'm suspicious! *g*

The story has delightful moments between the brothers and Shuu and Yuuta. It touches the heart in a quiet way. The writer does a wonderful job of building trust and acceptance between the characters. The artwork supports the story, each character distinct in appearance. I enjoyed spending time with boys, all of them. I can't wait for volume 2.
